Park Forest is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 774 at the 2010 census. Park Forest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of Park Forest was organized on November 1, 1871 by a group of farmers who had banded together to resist being driven out of their land by the city of Chicago. The village charter granted to Park Forest "the privilege and right to do all things necessary for its own welfare" and it was decided that "the people of this village" should be able to purchase goods and services from businesses within the Village limits. On October 9, 1881, park forest became an incorporated town with a population of 350. On July 14, 1902, Park Forest annexed the villages of West Dundee and East Dundee; these were two small towns which had been merged into Park Forest because they were adjacent to each other on two sides of a parkland parcel which had been leased by John Pritzker for $1 million (equivalent to $ as of 2019). In 1906, when Cook County was created, the annexation made Park Forest one county block long and increased its population size to over 10,000 residents. In 1922-23 local officials debated whether or not to annex Streamwood which was located just south of the then existing village Limits but ultimately decided against it because it would have brought too much change without any corresponding increase in revenue for Park Forest coffers. The last major annexation occurred when Riverdale Township (later Schaumburg) annexed portionsofParkForestonJanuary 17th 1959 bringing the total township's territory within our boundaries including parts that had been annexed previously such as Riverdale Heights & Norridge along with most recentlyStreamwood making it now 8 blocks long! This addition gave us our current borders going clockwise from north/south: Lower South Side -> North Side -> East Side -> South Side ->Riverdale Heights
Park Forest, Illinois was incorporated in 1848 and named for General James K. Polk, the 25th President of the United States. The town was located on a tract of land that had been owned by the government since 1786. The first settler in Park Forest was John Fenton, who arrived in 1814. In 1847, the United States Congress passed legislation establishing a public square in Park Forest. The square was dedicated to George Washington and his wife Martha Washington and became known as "The Square." In 1860, Park Forest became part of the new state of Illinois. Aftermath of the American Civil War (1861-1865) saw an increase in business activity in Park Forest due to reconstruction efforts following the war. Reconstruction also helped create jobs for many people in Park Forest, including many African Americans who had formerly worked on plantations. In 1916, when Chicago annexed downtown Chicago and most of its southern suburbs, Park Forest lost much of its economic importance within city limits. However, it continued to be heavily populated with black residents until suburban developmentMiami began to overtake Park Forrest's role as an agricultural center during the late 1920s and 1930s
