Park Forest is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. Park Forest was platted in 1853 and named for Amos P. Field, an early settler. It became a village in 1903 and a town in 1907. Park Forest is located in southeastern Cook County on the north side of the Chicago River. The history of Park Forest begins with Amos P. Field, who arrived on the banks of the Chicago River in 1853 and began to plat out land around what is now Park Forest Village. At first, Field only called his tract "Park Forest." He didn't have anyownership rights to it until he sold them to others late in1853-early 1854 under the name "West Side Plantation" and later "East Side Plantation." In 1863, General David Dixon Purchase purchased part of what is now Park Forest from Amos P. Field for $500 cash plus four horses and six cows (the actual number of animals present isn't known). Dixon renamed this tract Green Gables after his home on Long Island which he had visited while military governor of New York during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Dixon also donated two acres (0 hectares) to be used as a public schoolhouse near where he lived on Green Gables Street today; this property remains within Park Forest Village boundaries to this day! In 1904, when South Side Township was created from portions of Northside Township, part of Old Irvington Road passed through park forest making it one block wide between Old Irvington Road andCooktown Rd., becoming Northside Boulevard today! In 1907, when Southside Township became full-time again following its annexation by Cook County, much of East Side Avenue passing through park forest were annexed into Southside Township including most of Green Gables Street! Today remnants of original architecture still remain throughout Parker Grove Elementary School from 1870s-1920s while other buildings erected over ensuing years include: First Christian Church built 1912; Stonington Hall/Orphanage circa 1915; Reformed Presbyterian Church 1960s; Sunrise Baptist Church 1966-1973; Methodist Episcopal Zion church 1978-1980; African American Baptist church 1990s†††††* * Data taken from 2000 U.S Census
In 1871, the Illinois legislature passed a bill authorizing the erection of a public park on Park Forest. The park was designed by John Randel and opened to the public in 1879. It is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in Cook County.
