Park Forest is a small village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Park Forest is located on the border of Cook and DuPage Counties. It covers an area of just over one square mile (0.6 km²). The Village of Park Forest was organized in 1892 as part of the consolidation of three small villages – Arlington Heights, Cicero and Oak Lawn – into a larger town called Park Forest. The name originated from a grove of trees near the original town center that were considered "forest land" by early settlers. The first post office opened in 1893 and remained in operation until 1907; it was renamed Arlington Heights after General James H. McClernand, who had helped lead the Union army during the American Civil War and later served as President Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War. In 1905, Park Forest became home to Northwestern Illinois Agricultural College (later Northwestern State University) and began offering instruction in agriculture; it remains one of its most prominent educational institutions today. In 1927, Northwestern Illinois merged with Chicago State Teachers' College to form Chicago State Teachers' University; Park Forest residents continued to attend CTSU through its merger with Chicagoland Normal School (now Chicago Northern Illinois University). That same year saw also the opening of the first high school in Cook County – Elmhurst High School – which still operates today as one of leading high schools in Chicagoland. In 1988, Central Illinois University-Carbondale opened at park forest Community Center; this would be followed by Carbondale Valley Technical College annexation by CIU-Carbondale in 2002 and finally Carbondale–based Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) becoming a full-time campus for SIUC students in 2006 when SIUC acquired Northwest Missouri State University’s Carroll Campus buildings adjacent to Carbondale Valley Technical College east side on Highway 36 between I- 70/I 75/US 60 & US 61.) As noted earlier, Park Forest is located along what once constituted an agricultural section known for its productionof cornmeal mush from local maize fields dating back to pre- Euroamerican times! Today there are few if any remnants remaining from these past endeavors as many years ago so much development took place within such short distance geographically speaking! However some interesting items may still be found around such areas such as: a large steel mill complex built c1930( now derelict ),an old farmstead known as 'the red house' which sits atop a hill overlooking park forest village lies abandoned but apparently not too far off from current day traffic noise levels nearby etc etc... All these clues left behind by those who lived here long ago tell an amazing story about how things have changed over time within this tiny corner on earth!

In 1871, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill establishing Park Forest as a township in the County of Cook. The Township was organized on April 24, 1872. Park Forest had a population of only 100 residents when it was created, but by 1890 it had grown to over 1,500 residents. On November 3, 1896, Park Forest was attached to the city of Chicago by an act of the State Legislature. In 1905, Park Forest became one of the first municipalities in Cook County to establish zoning ordinances for its citizens. In 1916, Park Forest incorporated as a city and adopted a mayor-council form of government with voting privileges for its citizens.
