It is home to the Park Forest Museum and Park Forest Recreation Center. The Village of Park Forest was organized on October 1, 1871 when five families who had been living in a section of Cook County east of town formed a new village. At first all activity took place within the bounds of the then existing Village Hall; but soon it became evident that there was much to be done and that an organization which could bring about real progress and improvement would be essential to achieve these objects. In pursuance thereof, on December 15th, 1872 by resolution passed by the Village Council as follows: "We ordain that this presents itself as an act for organizing a Village." This resolution stipulated that no money should be forthcoming from any source other than subscriptions from those who inhabited or desired to inhabit in its vicinity The first mayor of Park Forest was John Purdy who served one term from 1872-1874 then resigned due to health reasons. On January 3rd, 1875 Samuel Sutherlin succeeded him and held office until his death on November 11th. He was followed by Charles Henschel who served two terms (1875-1879) before becoming Mayor again (1881-1885). On March 2nd, 1886 John Fenton took office as Mayor after being elected unopposed with only seven votes against him! During Fenton's time as Mayor many important changes were made such as annexing neighboring townships including North Side Township on February 16th 1888 which increased the population of Park forest by almost fifty percent while also providing more land for development purposes It wasn't until 1896 when Andrew Jansen becameMayor after winning election with over seventy percent of the vote! He would serve four terms (1902-1907) before leaving office due to illness. His successor Harry Potter would serve two terms (1907-1911) before becoming Mayor once more (1913-1920). During his tenure many major decisions were made such as annexation of Mokena Township & Carthage Township on October 14th 1913 which raised the population by almost twenty percent while also adding nearly one hundred acres for development purposes During 1920s through 1950s most residents lived in single family homes built during previous decades rather than purchasing their own housing estates like they do today . Most people here are descendants or ancestors of those originally residing here In 1971 park forest library opened its doors with over one thousand volumes donated by individuals throughout park forest

Park Forest, Illinois is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,973 at the 2000 census. Park Forest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is located on the east side of Chicago and between Lake Michigan and the Fox River. The Village of Park Forest was organized on April 25, 1892 by incorporation of a group of farmers who had gathered to resist an order from the federal government to clear land for a new cotton gin plant in Aurora Township. Park Forest became one of 110 villages formed as part of the Interstate Highway System in 1956. The Village's name comes from two sources: First, it derives from "Parcourt," an English word meaning forest or park; and second, because one half mile (1 kilometer) west of town was donated by Captain George Niles to be used as a public square. The square originally contained only three small trees but has since been widened to include a playground, pond, flower bed, and several streets. In 1898-99 Park Forest built its first school - now known as Old North High School - which opened on Academy Road near where Union Station now stands. Grades 1-4 were taught at home withinder benches while fifth through eighth grades were sent to nearby South Side Elementary School until that school closed in 1951 due to low enrollment levels; however classes continued intermittently at Old North until 1958 when it also burned down (). In 1905-06 local farmer Gouverneur Morris donation helped finance construction of Market Street Congregational Church which replaced an earlier wooden building that caught fire during services that year (). After years of fundraising efforts by church members and donations from other residents (), Market Street Congregational Church was completed in 1909 and served as theVillage's main parish hall until 1965 when it too burned down (). In 1871, the first land in Park Forest was purchased by a group of farmers. The men who bought the land formed the Village of Park Forest and started to build their homes. In 1875, they donated land to the Illinois State Normal School and named it Park Forest Psychiatric Hospital. It was during this time that Park Forest became a center for mental health care.
