When the first Americans arrived in what is now Park Forest, they were looking for a place to farm and live. The area was rich in natural resources, including lead and silver mines. These mines made Park Forest one of the most important cities on the continent. It was also an important center for ammunition production. Ammunition was used to fight wars from 1775 until 1865. In that time, Park Forest produced over 20% of all military ammunition in the United States. The first ammunition factory in Park Forest was built in 1857 by Samuel Colt and his partners. It became known as the Colt Manufacturing Company. This company manufactured pistols and other firearms from 1857 until it merged with Remington Arms Company in 1907. In 1865, Confederate forces invaded America and began fighting against Union troops. The need for munitions became great during this time, and many companies came up with new ways to produce ammunition. In 1907, Park Forest merged with Remington Arms Company to form Browning-Remington Corporation. This company continued manufacturing firearms and ammo until it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1937 to become Winchester Ammunition Corporation

Park Forest is located near the village of Park City and the towns of Addison and Wheaton. The name "Park Forest" originated from two parcels of land that were donated to the village by John H. Park in 1892. The Village of Park City was incorporated on November 15, 1893, and it became part of the larger Park Forest community. The first store in Park City opened its doors on Main Street in 1895. In 1900, an Eclipse airship crash landed at Pk Forrest Airport causing a great deal of destruction which led to the need for a new airport nearby. Construction began on this new airport in 1903 and it was dedicated on November 30, 1904. By 1907, all passenger flights had been discontinued at Pk Forrest Airport due to World War I; however, commercial aviation resumed soon afterward with the opening of Chicago's Midway Airport! In 1853, the Illinois legislature passed a bill creating Park Forest. The forest was named for General David Dixon, who had helped create the city of Chicago. Park Forest was an immense tract of land that stretched from the border of Cook County south to the Indiana state line. It included more than 900 square miles and covered much of what is now northern Illinois and parts of Wisconsin.
