Today, Park Forest boasts several major businesses including Smith's Fine Foods (a grocery store chain), Ford Financial Services (a car dealership), WSB-TV Channel 3 (Fox News affiliate) and two hospitals - Stritch Hospital Foundation Hospital & Medical Center/Stritch University Hospital both leased from Adventist HealthCare System. The annexation created new neighborhoods within Park Forest that are still known today: South Side (near DeKalb Avenue), North Side (near Roosevelt Boulevard), and Golf Course Village (northwest corner of Roosevelt Boulevard and Westcott Avenue). The city's first mayor was William J. Norris who served from 1911-1917 and then Edward Gwynn who served from 1917-1920 and again from 1925-1929 before being succeeded by James Whelan until his death in 1951. From 1929 until his death in 1961 Mayor Whelan's son Edward Gwynn II served as Mayor pro tempore under Mayor James Whelan’s successor John Prentice Jr.. During World War II most of park forest was used as an industrial area by parks department employees or their families while other parts wereserviced by military units or civilians seeking shelter from bombing raids over Chicago metropolitan area
The Park Forest area was first settled in 1814. The community of Park Forest was named after James K. Polk, the 25th president of the United States. In 1853, a post office was established at Park Forest. In 1865, the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad came through Park Forest and started transporting goods to and from Chicago. The railroad made ParkForest an important stop for passengers and goods.
