Palos Hills, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 61,521 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous of the seven cities in Cook County and one of its six county seats. The first settler in this area was Peter Goodrich who built a cabin on an ancient Indian burial ground in 1812. In 1818, Samuel J. Morse established a ferry service across the Chicago River to bring goods and passengers back and forth between Palos Hills and Maywood. These early settlers were responsible for establishing what would become the nucleus of today's Palos Hills community – they were merchants and builders who believed that their town could be a center for trade and commerce with other villages in Cook County as well as Greater Chicago. In 1847, Hermann Bieler purchased 2 acres (0.8 km²) along Deerfield Road from John Ralston opposite current day Racine Avenue for $225 ($ in ). He named his tract "Bieler's Prairie" after himself and his brother-in-law George Bieler (a developer of Racine). In 1848, he erected a two-story wood frame toll house on his property which remained until 1938 when it was destroyed by fire

The Palos Hills community was founded on the site of a small Indian village in 1812 by Captain John Stephenson. The town was named after Major General George Washington's farmstead in Fairfax County, Virginia. The area that would become Palos Hills was first settled by French and Native Americans in the 17th century. By 1800, English settlers had also arrived in the area and began to develop the land into farms. In 1812, Captain John Stephenson erected a small cabin near present-day Palos Hills to provide rudimentary services for his new settlement. The first known resident of Palos Hills was Capt. James Fenton who arrived in 1813 from Maryland with his family. A year later, Fenton married Jane Dryden and they set up home at 9 Wacker Drive where they lived until their death in 1824. In 1814, Daniel Payne purchased 1,000 acres of land east of what is now Palos Hills from Govan McCulloch for $5 per acre . Payne built a sawmill and gristmill on his property which became known as "Payne's Mill." The first product produced at Payne's Mill was flour which was ground into meal for breadmaking and other purposes by local farmers. By 1820, Payne had also developed a vegetable garden which he donated to the town during its incorporation as an unincorporated community under the name "Englewood." By 1830, most of the original English settlers had died or moved away while some continued to live in Englewood and pay taxes there until their deaths between 1830-1834 inclusive (the last being Capt John Goodspeed). Among those remaining were Mr & Mrs Elisha Hutton who raised two children within Englewood before moving away circa 1840 when one daughter reached adulthood; this girl later married Colleton Hovey who resided permanently within Englewood from about 1850 until his death sometime after 1880; however Colleton never remarried During this time period many mills closed due mostly to changes brought about by technological advances such as railroads which made production more efficient than prior methods; however a few remain today including Shingles Iron Works located just south of present day Highway 67 off Route 54 which opened its doors on October 28th 1860 Many residents left during this time period because of mechanization/urbanization developments taking place throughout Illinois threatening jobs both locally and elsewhere; however some residents chose to stay behind including Captn John Goodspeed who built a house on what is now West Side Road (now US-131) opposite current day Downey Elementary School From here he started downading corn products exported to New York City through Chicago using wagons pulled by oxen until 1865 when he finally abandoned this venture due health concerns associated with riding atop broken rails all day long
In 1838, the Palos Hills area was part of the Town of Rome. The town was organized in 1841 and named for George Washington, first president of the United States. The first post office in Rome opened in 1843. In 1865, Rome amalgamated with other towns in Cook County to form the city of Chicago.
