In 1876, Palos Hills became the home of the first American telescope, a breech-loading mylar instrument designed by Samuel Pierpont Morgan. The instrument was used to view celestial objects for the first time. The observatory operated until 1922 when it was replaced by an automated system. In 1928, a new building was constructed on nearby Racine Avenue in order to improve optics and performance of the automated system. The Scopes Observatory is now part of the Illinois State Museum and is open to the public every day from 9am to 5pm. In 1865, the railroad arrived and soon the town became a center for communication and transportation. The population increased rapidly during the 19th century as farming and manufacturing flourished in the area. By 1920, Palos Hills had become a small city with its own mayor and City Council. However, during World War II the city experienced significant growth as munitions production took place within its boundaries.
