Palos Hills is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 25,794 at the 2010 census. Palos Hills is located on the southern bank of the Chicago River and is bordered by Aurora to the north, Maywood to the east, Hinsdale to the south, and Oak Park to the west. The township was organized on July 1, 1857 from parts of North Side Township and South Side Township. It named after Colonel Jesse P. Palos (1784-1858), an early settler in Cook County who served as justice of peace for Cook County from 1827-1829 and 1830-1831. The original courthouse in Palos Hills was destroyed by fire in 1861 but a new courthouse was completed near present day 95th Street and Elmira Road in 1865; it also burned down in 1865. In 1870, John Denson bought 640 acres (248 hectares) around what is now downtown Palos Hills for $5 per acre ($137/hectare). This land became one of Chicago's major streetcar suburbs with over 100 miles (160 km) of track linking different parts of town. In 1893, railroad magnate Samuel Insull donated land adjacent to his tracks along 95th Street between Elmira Road and Westmont Avenue for use as a park which he called "Insull Park". Insull Boulevard runs parallel to Elmira Road through town today. He also donated money towards building two high schools: Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) - founded in 1901 as Southern Illinois Normal School - which relocated from Carbondale to Palos Hills following its merger with IUPChicago in 1923; and Northern Illinois University DeKalb - founded by Drury College president Augustus Kelley DeKalb in 1889 as Northern Illinois University at DeKalb - which moved from Rockford to Palos Hills following its merger with IUPChicago in 1949). By 1850, they had erected a small cabin on the land where present day Route 66 meets Interstate 90. The Stephenson family ran a farm there until 1854 when John's father died suddenly. John took over operations and continued to grow crops until 1861 when he sold his land to George Hutton. From 1861-1867, Hutton served as Mayor of Palos Hills before becoming Governor of Illinois in 1868. In 1865, he married Sarah Epps and together they started a grocery store on Main Street that would become one of the largest in town. They also operated a bakery which produced bread and pastries for local residents until 1908 when they closed down due to financial difficulties. During World War II,Palos Hills played an important role in supplying food for soldiers stationed along I-90A north of Springfield. In 1948, Governor Adlai Stevenson announced that the town would be chosen as site for Illinois' new capital city; however, due to budgetary problems$, Palos Hills declined to participate in the process and instead chose Urbana instead . Despite these setbacks*, Palos Halls history continues forward with numerous events being held annually such as Pipe Laying Day on April 15th (the original day established by Stephenson), Fourth of July celebrations (which have included music concerts at various locations throughout town), pancake breakfast at Stinson Park on July 4th each year (the park is home to several restaurants including Red Lobster ), Artisan Faire each fall (featuring local artists selling their work outdoors),etc., etc..
