Palo Hills is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 61,431 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Cook County and one of the fastest-growing cities in Illinois. Palos Hills was founded on October 17, 1871 by George Washington Smith and his brother Amos Smith. The original site of the town had been purchased from its previous occupants by John P. Morton and others in 1857 as part of a land purchase that extended southeast from Chicago along the line now known as I-90. The name Palos Hills may have come from nearby Mount Prospect Township, which was originally named Palmyra after Mrs. Morton's family home thereabouts. Founded as a Corn Belt village on the east side of what is now downtown Palos Hills, with a population of just over 100 people in 1871, Growth continued slowly until 1900 when it exploded due to oil exploration near Porter Road and Open field #4 (now Old Highway 1). By 1910 there were more than 4500 people living in Palos Hills proper; 4000 more lived scattered around its periphery including within what is now Lincolnwood Cemetery/Goodyear Park on Porter Road and West Side Avenue (now State Street). More than 125 businesses were established during this time period - many still active today - some dating back to before Prohibition began: Waxy Bottles & Rubber Products Company; American Tobacco Company; Samartin Printing & Paper Products; First National Bankruptcy Trust Company; Second National Bankruptcy Trust Company; Chicago Coal handling company - all prior owners or operators of coal trains arriving at Union Station through their respective terminals on State Street including Armour Coal Handling Terminal Building (later Sears Tower); Chicago Elevated Railway Terminal building - later Midtown Center mall! In 1911 Mayor William Schieffer declared prohibition unconstitutional due to social unrest attendant with implementation throughout much of the country and renamed Downtown Business District after Representative John J. McCormick who championed reform legislation that would prohibit liquor sales throughout Cook County before becoming U.S. Senator from Illinois in 1933 Downtown Business District boundaries changed again following World War II when business interests shifted northward towards Fullerton Boulevard which ran parallel to I- Plaza then south along Glen Ellyn Avenue before turning west onto Belmont Boulevard where it met I-680/Old Route 31 leading into Downers Grove During this era many landmark buildings such as McCormick House were built including Palmerfausto's Italian restaurant which operated until 1978 DowntownBusinessDistrict boundaries remained unchanged until 1991 when they were changed once again following incorporation of neighboring Fullerton Township into Palo Alto City Limits
