Palos Hills, Illinois is a small town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,822 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Palos Hills community was founded in 1871 by John A. Palmer and his family after they moved from Aurora, Illinois to what is now Palos Hills because their land had been taken from them during the American Civil War. The original village had a store and blacksmith shop, but no public buildings or social services were available until 1912 when a veterinary hospital opened on West Side Road. In 1916 the first school was built; it became an all-girls high school in 1951. In 1969 the village board voted to annex neighboring unincorporated areas of Cook County and become part of the new city of Chicago; this annexation met with opposition from some residents who felt that their home village would remain unchanged if annexed and felt that city services would be better provided in their own neighborhood. After two years of negotiations and vote by the board, Palos Hills remained within its own borders and continued to enjoy its own independent government until May 2nd, 1974 when Chicagoland Water District No. 3 took control over all water deliveries to villages within Cook County - meaning that Palos Hills effectively ceased to exist as an official municipality/village (although it still exists as an unofficial ZIP code). On October 1st 2009 Mayor Dan McNulty held a referendum for voters on whether or not to annex into neighboring Elmhurst Township - which passed with 66% approval margin! This means that though Palos Hills technically ceases to exist right before your eyes (due to Chicagoland Water District taking over water deliveries), you can still visit our lovely little town every day without fear of having your house ripped down!
