In 1928, Louis Auchincloss purchased 1,000 acres (500 hectares) of land east of Palos Hills from Jesse Owens for $750 000 dollars after he won the men's 100 metre dash at the Berlin Olympics. This made Palos Hills one of the largest landowners in Cook County and also gave it its name; since then it has been commonly used to describe all or any part of what are now its six villages: Arlington Park, Bloomingdale Park, Cicero Hill/Algonquin North/Avondale Estates/Eatonville/Lake Forest East/Lakeshore West—all within walking distance of each other and all within easy reach by public transportation including buses from downtown Chicago or by car from Oak Lawn– Chicagoland Airport (). In 1968, 24% of PALOS HILLS residents were employed in some form either directly or indirectly with businesses located within one mile (1 kilometer) radius following annexation into Arlington Park Township which had been created adjacent to PALOS HILLS village limits in 1966 when those limits were increased from .5 square miles (160 hectare) to 2 square miles (100 hectare).Today PALOS HILLS continues to be home to some employment concentrations but most notably professional services such as Lawyers', Doctors' offices etc., while residents continue their day jobs outsideington park
The Palos Hills community was platted in 1871, and by 1865, it had a population of 560. The first post office opened in 1870, and the town received its name from General John A. Logan, who was also the namesake of Logan County. In 1915, Palos Hills was annexed into Cook County, Illinois.
