In 1849, DeTamble married Polly Coleman and moved from Palos Hills to Decatur, Illinois. There he began to sell his tools and other goods at local markets. By 1861, he had opened a second store in Decatur and continued to sells his products there until 1865 when he sold everything else too and relocated back to Palos Hills. In 1872, DeTamble passed away but his legacy lives on through his family's businesses which continue today.

Palos Hills, Illinois was founded in 1833 by George Stephenson, the founder of the locomotive and engine builder Stephenson, & Company. The community is located in Cook County, Illinois on a bluff overlooking the Chicago River. At its peak in the early 1800s Palos Hills had over 20 families and 1,000 residents. In 1868 Palos Hills became a village and today has a population of around 910 people. The first settler in what would become Palos Hills was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1833 from Connecticut with his family. He built a cabin near what is now State Road 114 and named it Palos Hills after his home state. Over time other settlers followed Caldwell's lead and began to settle in the area around what is now State Road 114. In 1838 Samuel Gridley purchased land at present-day 63rd Street and Broadway in northwestern Cook County for $640 cash. Gridley renamed his land "Gridley Heights". By 1840 there were over 10 families living in Gridley Heights including Caldwell's two children as well as their parents and siblings. gridleys store also came into existence during this time along with a blacksmith shop which served as the main source of income for many of these early settlers. During this time there were also several religious conversions taking place within the townspeople; some starting out as Methodist missionaries while others converted to Catholicism or Lutheranism (later becoming Methodists). One such convert was John Beattie who moved to Palos Hills from Burlington, Vermont in 1840 and started teaching school at 12th Avenue South before eventually moving up through the ranks at Stephenson & Company where he became an assistant engineer by 1862 (eventually becoming head engineer). "By 1850 nearly all of Cook County had been surveyed...and by 1860 almost all but one square mile of county had been acquired." From this point on development slowed due to lack of available funding however some new businesses did come online such as a grocery store opened up on 58th Street Northeast by Joseph Bogan sometime between 1861-1863 that continued until it burned down two years later (the building still stands today). Another business venture which took off during this time was George Stephenson's original locomotive builder/builder company known simply as Stephenson & Company which operated out of Griffin Hall on Sixty-second Street Northeast for most of their days operations beginning circa 1865 until they closed their doors permanently c1867 due to financial difficulties.. This company supplied both steam locomotives used by local road builders across Chicago throughout the 1870s viz Pennsylvania Railroad #5(built 1869), Union Pacific #8( Built 1870) etc.; bricklayers' yards situated at Wacker Drive between 60th Street Northeast and 61st Streets Northwest; meatpacking plants located along Northwestern Expressway near East Side Highway; breweries located near Des Plaines River south bank between Milwaukee Avenue east side and Racine Avenue north side.. With limited resources no new subdivisions were authorized within town limits until about 1880 when developers commenced efforts to spruce up downtown with large lots included Restrictions against building more than four stories deep remained until repealed circa 1929." With increasing commercial activity came an increase population growth rate however social stability never really ensued due to smalltown lifestyle incompatible with larger city lifestylevironing conditions often leading to intergenerational poverty found among some rural American communities prior thereto Quaker backgrounds endemic notably among Mennonite members residing therein combined semi-rural isolation reinforced class distinctions characteristic thereof creating difficulties common unto typical 19th century United States Midwest society."
The Palos Hills community began as a small farming village in 1853. The first settlers were farmers who came from the town of Peoria, Illinois. The original name for the community was Palos Prairie, but it was changed to Palos Hills in 1864 because of the influence of General James H. Wilson, who served as president of the United States at that time. In 1916, the community became an incorporated municipality and is now located in Cook County.
