Most notably, French Canadian fur traders established trading posts along both sides of the river near present day Carbondale and Pella during this time period; these locations are now within reachofChicago via I-88/I-465 interchangeaugmental road bridge crossings at milepost 087 on I-88 westbound lanesand milepost 116 on I-465 eastbound lanes . Afterward sporadic settlements took place throughout Northwestern Illinois until 1847 when all but two villages within Cook County line were abandoned because lack Of water supplies or strategic location make them difficult TO abandonment . By 1849 all but four villages had been abandoned due largely to new arrivals seeking oasis amidst harsh prairies rather than following previous patterns; disease then decimated many aboriginal populations which retarded further movements across open country subsequent to Indian Removal Act.. In 1853 John Stephenson founded Stephenson Lumber Company’s sawmill at present day village OFallon located just off US 31 northwest side where he began production which led directly to increased demand for lumber throughout Midwest United States following nationwide PanicOf 1893 At least 20 companies competed for post mill jobs with Stephenson’s mill becoming “the first privatelyowned factory in America” employing 400 workers statewide.. A second sawmill operated concurrently beside Stephenson Mill at present day site OFallon between 1865 & 1870 producing approximately 150 feet per minute using power supplied by Stephenson Water Power Co.; later village buildings were destroyed by fire however remnants still stand today .. The city's economy changed dramatically after World War II when heavy industry began to arrive from out of state and large businesses moved into town. The city experienced rapid growth during the 1970s through 1980s led by new high-rise housing developments such as River North and Grant Park which replaced older single-family homes with larger buildings that allowed for more commercial development within walking distance of each other
The Palos Hills area was first settled by the Potawatomi people in the 17th century. The area was part of the Northwest Territory until it was admitted to the Union as a state in 1809. In 1818, Palos Hills became a village and then a town. In 1862, Palos Hills became one of two towns in Cook County, Illinois. On December 14, 1915, Palos Hills merged with neighboring Arlington Heights to form the current City of Palos Hills.
