Palos Hills, Illinois is a city located in Cook County, Illinois. It is the largest city in Cook County by population and the second most populous city in Illinois after Chicago. The Palos Hills area was first settled by Germans in 1833 and was incorporated as a village in 1868. The current City of Palos Hills was formed on December 1, 1992 when the former Village of Palos Hills, which encompassed much of what is now the City of Chicago, merged with neighboring Town of Hoffman Estates. The merger resulted in the creation of one municipality with a combined population of over 200,000 people. The history of Palos Hills dates back to 1833 when German settlers arrived in what is now Cook County from Frankfurt am Main, Germany. These settlers were known as "Fürstenberger" or "Fürstenbergers." They built sawmills and gristmills within their villages and began to grow maize and wheat for local markets. By 1840, there were at least 25 Fürstenberger families living in what is now Palos Hills. In 1868, when Chicago was founded as a new town on the West Side of Chicago, Fürstenbergers decided to move their businesses into thattown so they could continue to grow food for their communities back home. This led to the founding of Village Of Palos HIlls on November 3rd, 1968 by Mayor Dick Daley with assistance from then-Governor Pat Quinn’s office under then-City Manager Edward Joffe. At its peak during its inaugural year (1968), Village Of Palos Hills had about 500 residents and ten businesses including two banks and four grocery stores along Elm Street between Western Avenue and Michigan Avenue.(1) The following year (1969), however, Village Of Palos HIlls split into two parts due to budget limitations caused by tight budgetary constraints within Cook County.(2) One part - later renamed “Hoffman Estates” - became an enclave within newly annexed University Park while the other - later renamed “PalOS HILLS” - became an independent entity outside University Park.(3) With more than 2200 residents residing within both Hoffmann Estates/PalOS HILLS areas at its peak (1970), it seems that Villages OF PalOS HILLS had reached parity with Cities OF Chicago even thoughVillage OF PALOS HILLS only boasted about 10%ofthetotalpopulationofChicago.(4) However this period marked only a fleeting glimpse into things to come; soon afterwards came monstrous demographic changes which would forever alter how north suburbanites view themselves: first through annexations resulting from acreage annexation disputes between municipalities over land values; secondly through wavesOf gentrification ensuing from higher-paying jobs opening up near universities/major malls; finally through wavesOf Hispanic immigrants arriving who brought different cultural norms and expectations which subsequently changed howsouth suburbanites viewed themselves also.-All told these demographic shifts have resultedInaninearly90percentpopulation divergencebetweenCitiesOFChicagoandVillagesOF PALOS HILS since 1960!(5) Today’s Situation: A Demographic Revolution?
