The Palos Hills area was first settled in the mid-19th century by Irish immigrants. The community grew quickly, and by 1860 there were over 100 residents. By 1870, the population had reached 1,500 people. In 1881, the Palos Hills Post Office was established and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1978. In 1878, a group of farmers organized to purchase 4 acres of land east of present day Palos Hills for a new town center. They named their new town after their home country – Ireland – and began construction on what is now known as Fountain Square. The town's first post office opened in 1881. By 1915, the population had reached 3,000 people and it had grown to 5,000 by 1930. A fire destroyed most of the town in 1938 but it slowly rebuilt with help from outside sources such as the Works Progress Administration (WPA). In 1945, following World War II veterans' return to America, the town again experienced growth with the opening of a military barracks called Fort Harrison on Deerfield Road near present day Parkdale Elementary School. This added many more residents to what is today an estimated 10,000 people living within its boundaries. Today's economy is based largely on education and healthcare services; however, some businesses do exist that are related to manufacturing or agriculture dating back to when this part of Illinois was still largely rural
The Palos Hills community was founded in 1837, when the first post office was established there. The town was named for General Samuel J.Palos, a signer of the Illinois Constitution and a member of the United States Senate. By 1860, Palos Hills had a population of around 2,000 people. It became an agricultural center during the late 1800s and early 1900s, with large tracts of land being devoted to growing corn, wheat, and other crops. In 1916, Palos Hills experienced its first tornado outbreak when five tornadoes touched down in the town. During World War II, much of Palos Hills was occupied by the U.S. military as part of the Battle of Midway; many homes were destroyed or damaged in that conflict.
