The Palos Hills area was first settled by the Lenape Native Americans in the early 17th century. The first European to arrive in what is now Illinois was General James K. Polk, who landed on the current site of Chicago on November 8, 1846. He was part of a group of American soldiers who had been sent to Fort Dearborn in Michigan Territory to protect the new United States against Mexico's threat to annex that territory. The land that would become Palos Hills was part of this territory. In 1854, a group of Indiana farmers named Hendricks purchased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land east of present-day Palos Hills from the Lenapes. They named their property Cook County after President James K. Polk's brother and Vice President Andrew Johnson's uncle, John Cranch Hendricks. In 1857, they sold another 500 acres (200 hectares) to George Washington Carver for $10 per acre ($2 million at today's prices). In 1865, Abraham Lincoln presented Congress with a bill proposing that Illinois be admitted as a state; it passed both houses but did not receive the signature of Governor Richard M. Daley until March 4, 1866 due to lack of support from southern Illinoisans who were opposed to slavery within the newly formed state. Daley signed the bill on March 6 and Illinois became a Ulysses S. Grant State on July 1, 1868 when all free states were forced into Union under pressure from Northern states led by president Andrew Johnson
