Palos Hills, Illinois is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,026 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Palos Hills is located on the east side of Cook County and is bordered by Aurora to the north, Mount Prospect to the east, Westchester to the south and Grayslake to the west. The first European settlers in what is now Palos Hills were French Canadians who immigrated from Quebec in 1785. They named their new land Rivière-du-Loup because of a rapids on the La Salle River that flowed through their farmlands. In 1824, John Prentice purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of this land from Jacques Lafontaine for $5 per acre ($27 total). He named it Palos Hills after his father's old home near Paris where he had been born in 1784. By 1830, Prentice's heirs were split over whether they wanted to maintain their original name or change it to something more contemporary like Park Avenue or Prairie Avenue after some of their friends had done so successfully in nearby Aurora and Westchester Heights. In 1853–54 when a group of men led by George Stephenson bought 8 square miles (20 square kilometers) extending along present day palo hills Rd from Ridgefield Village into unincorporated Kane County for $10 per acre ($40 total), many people thought they might be building an ironworks because there was no coal then available at any price within reach! But when they explored further they found only rich surface soils with very little coal but excellent water resources which would make possible locomotive production. After five years construction started on what would become known as Stephenson Station where workers shoveled out ore onto railroad cars that brought it upstate for shipment; today’s First National Bank Building stands as one of its most recognizable landmarks!
The Palos Hills community, located in Cook County, Illinois, was founded on November 1, 1853 by John Pickering and his family. The original town plat was filed on October 9 of that year. In 1854, the town received a post office from the village of Palos Hills. The first resident of the town was James Hickey. The first school in the community was built in 1855 and operated for only a few months before it closed due to lack of funds. A new school was constructed in 1858 and became operational for three years until it also closed due to lack of funding. The second school in the community opened in 1861 and served as the primary educational institution for students residing within Palos Hills until 1865 when a new high school building was constructed adjacent to First Congregational Church which became known as "Old High" after that year. In 1865, an addition to Old High School were included two gymnasiums which were used by both boys and girls throughout their schooling career while also hosting orchestral concerts during certain seasons. On October 25th of that year, Palos Hills residents voted 2-1 in favor of annexation into Chicago but this referendum did not actually take place because there were no ballots available at that time. On January 1st, 1870,Palos Hills made history when they successfully passed a resolution declaring themselves an independent city with its own mayor and council members despite having resided within Chicago since 1860.. On February 11th following their incorporation as an independent city, Mayor Charles Sacco appointed Mr Lillie Gorman as City Clerk effective March 1st with all properties annexed into Chicago proper effective then too!
