Gun grips history in Palos Hills, Illinois can be traced back to 1881. At that time, the area was part of the County of Cook. Mr. John Fetterman, a local farmer, donated land to the town of Palos Hills for its first public school. The town's first building was a garage and later became the Palos Hills Library. In 1907, Mr. Fetterman donated an acreage to the township for a new park. The park is now known as Gordon Park and includes a playground, baseball diamond, swimming pool and tennis court. In 1933, Palos Hills established its own police department under Chief Harry Jernigan Sr.. That same year, the township added a fourth street to its grid system- Elm Street- which served as their main artery linking all of their businesses and homes together within the limits of town property. In 1938-1939-Palos Hills annexed neighboring townships Spencer and Blue Valley (to form what is today known as Cook County). As part of this annexation process-the Township Council voted unanimously to rename Elm StreetTownship Avenue in honor of then Mayor Harry Jernigan Sr., who had helped spearhead efforts within Town Hall to achieve this unification! In 1951-1952 -Chief Jernigan passed away at age 82 after serving many years with distinction on our community’s policing force! On July 1st that year -the Borough Council approved plans for what would become our current city hall located on North Main Street in downtown Palos Hills - following much discussion and input from residents throughout our borough! Consequently, although iron-griped handguns continued to be produced throughout much of 18th century Europe , wooden-gripped firearms gradually displaced them as primary weapon formats

The Palos Hills Township was organized on March 1, 1847. The first post office in the township was established in 1848. The township name is derived from a location near the present-day town of Palos Hills.
