As time passed and more people arrived in what would become Palos Hills, they began to name streets after local officials or other noteworthy residents or organizations such as General John A. Logan (1836-1911), Samuel Morse (1795-1856), Milton Siller (1850-1937), Harry Houdini (1863-1935), and Julius Rosenwald (1865-1950). In 1871, a post office was established at Palos Hills with five mailboxes; three were used for first class mail and two for second class mail when Wire Wagon Road became trunk road 7A in 1872. In 1886, a sawmill opened along Wire Wagon Road which helped support the Village's economy until it closed in 1949 due to competition from larger mills nearer Chicago; however, some evidence suggests that sawmills may have reopened near present day Palos Hills after closure in 1949 because they still produce lumber today but without any associated traffic noise or pollution problems like those seen around larger mills near downtown Chicago during this time period
