Palos Heights is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It was founded by George Washington Carver in 1887. The population was 20,873 at the 2010 census. Palos Heights is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Janesville Metropolitan Statistical Area. George Washington Carver settled in Palos Heights on November 25, 1887 after moving from Griggsboro, Kentucky. He and his wife Anna started a small grocery store in the village and soon had a large clientele. Carver became known for his fresh produce and meat products, which he sold through his shop and at local fairs. His products made him successful enough that he decided to open a farm nearby in 1889. The Carvers' farm produced vegetables, eggs, milk, chickens, pigs, horses and other livestock until they sold it in 1916 to Edwin Hogenkamp Jr., who renamed it Hogenkamp Farms Incorporated (now Eaton Companies). In 1932 John A. Kapp purchased the property from Hogenkamp and continued to operate it as Kapp Farms until 1984 when it was merged into Albertsons Incorporated (now Kroger Co.). The Village of Palos Heights was organized on February 17, 1907 under the name of "Griggsboro". On July 1 of that year residents voted to change their name to Palos Heights after watching an advertisement for a new town on TV. The original nameakes were former Village President Mrsgrayson Allcott's suggestion stemming from her observation that there were no moreGriggsboro residents left living east of Des Plaines Avenue so long as she remained President of the Village Council (later renamed Township Council). In 1927 Mayor James Fenton designated portions of west suburban Cook County as being within Palos Heights Township; this included portions now located within Arlington Park and Mount Prospect townships as well as parts of Downers Grove Township now lived by people who live within Schaumburg or Willowbrook communities near Oak Lawn Lake
The area now known as Palos Heights was first settled by the Hennepin County Dutch in the early 18th century. The first European to come to what is now Palos Heights was Nicholas Nickerson, who arrived in 1762. In 1812, Palos Heights was organized as a town and later became a village. The Village of Palos Heights suffered during the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. However, despite being destroyed, it emerged from the fire with new leadership and began to rebuild. By 1870, Palos Heights had a population of 1,200 people and was home to five churches including the Methodist Episcopal Church and St. John's Baptist Church. In 1907, PALOS HEIGHTS VILLAGE SCHOOL DISTRICT #1was established when Cook County purchased land from the Village for $2 million dollars. Today, PALOS HEIGHTS IS A FIRST GRADE SCHOOL District with over 900 students!
