In 1959, when new county boundaries were set up following a reorganization of Illinois counties,[2] part of Palos Heights went to DuPage County while another part (including much of today's west side) went to Kane County.[3][4] A referendum approved annexation by Kane County on November 3rd 1978 but rescinded it three days later due to lack of support.[5] On December 12th 1978 a final vote resulted in annexing most of what are now Kane and DuPage Counties back into Cook County as well as adding some eastern Kendall Township for good measure;[6][7][8] this made total population for City limits at 43,471 residents as opposed to the current 44,595 residents who live within City limits only (excluding Jarvis and Elgin wards which have their own cities). Prior to annexation all citizens within City limits were considered residents even if they - like many recent arrivals - did not live inside the city walls erected since enlargement began more than 25 years ago! One major reason why large numbers have resided within City Limits for so long is economic: jobs have always been an important factor hereabouts given that companies such as Boeing and Motorola have plants located throughout or close by various parts of Cook Valley including Schaumburg and Rolling Meadows right up until very recently! One should also keep in mind that annexed areas typically experience higher levels of development density than unannexed areas owing largely to zoning laws designed specifically for annexed municipalities which mandate denser Development patterns with accompanying taller buildings etc... Palos Heights is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It was established in 1847 by John Smith and his family as the site of their holdings on the west side of Chicago. The current building was erected in 1907 and is one of the few remaining stone buildings from the original Village of Palos Heights. In 1912, Mayor Edward J. Byrne donated land to create the Palos Hills Park which includes an athletic field, tennis courts, a movie theater and other amenities for the community. Today, there are also several stores and restaurants located within walking distance of the park. The Village council voted in 2017 to annex part of neighbouring Westmont Township because it felt that annexation would help improve infrastructure within Palos Heights while also increasing its overall tax base. The vote followed concerns raised about Westmont's lack of social services and financial stability after years of decline.
The area now known as Palos Heights was part of the Northwest Territory of Illinois, formed in 1803. The territory was named for Captain James K. Polk, who fought in the War of 1812 and served as United States Secretary of War under President James K. Polk. As a result of its location on the eastern border of Indiana and Ohio, Palos Heights became an important crossroads in early 19th century America. In 1814, Palos Heights residents donated land to the Illinois State Normal University, which later became Illinois State University.
