Palos Heights, IL is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 84,898 at the 2010 census. It is the sixth largest city in Chicago and the second most populous inner-city municipality after Chicago proper. Palos Heights is one of two cities in Cook County with an estimated population above 100,000. The other city is Oak Lawn. The first European settler in what would become Palos Heights was Nicholas Kirkpatrick who arrived on July 14, 1827 from London. He named his new land Kirkpatrick's Grove after his brother-in-law and friend Sir William Kirkmichael who had settled near present day Kildare Road and Pulaski Highway east of Chicago. Kirkpatrick's Grove was not continuous with the town that developed around it; parts were located in what is now Westchester Township (now Kane County), while other areas later became part of village of Cicero (now Elmhurst) and later Park Ridge (now Glenview). However, all three towns did share a common core: a small square market place surrounded by homes on streets parallel to Lake Michigan which served as their centerpiece. In 1836 Christian Petersen bought 1,500 acres (4 km²) adjoining James Wirtz's 2nd Ward farm for $1 per acre ($40 per hectare). This area would eventually form the nucleus of today's Palos Heights Village/Township/City limits; Petersen also donated land to St Botolph’s Church adjacent to his own home for use as parish churchyards when he died in 1853 aged 72 years old. It wasn't until1855 when developers Charles Bickerton and John Jorourke opened up much larger lots - 3 blocks wide at right angles to each other on State Street - which became known as "The North Side." The lots ran north from State between Adams Boulevard and Woodlawn Avenue until they met again south of Cicero Avenue at Shorewood Drive (). Thereafter they curved southeastward gradually becoming narrower until reaching their current boundaries just west of I-290 exit 13A off Interstate 90 . Bickerton & Jorourke built some distinctive brick buildings still standing today including Hudson’s Store (), Deaconess Hospital (), Davenport House (), Griffin’s Grocery store () – now occupied by Sears & Roebuck -and finally Wirtz’s Millinery shop (). The millinery business closed down but several structures remain extant such as Haverford Hall () – now used by Northwestern University -and Erwin Place (). In 1886 Ayer Company incorporated which soon built Ayer Mills which burned down in 1902 but continued to produce flourexport products under various names until 1999 when it merged with Archer Daniels Midland Co., then folded into Syngenta AG . In 1919 Mayor Thomas Daley appointed Mrs Ada Chapin Miller director of public works; she helped develop comprehensive plans for many aspects of suburban development including zoning changes allowing large apartment towers along lakefront boulevards across from downtown Loop Tollway; these developments are now called Uptown Palos Hills . On November 4th 1920 Mayor Daley announced that he will run for re-election against Republican incumbent Edward Meehan Jr.; Daley won easily over challenger George Ryanaky Sr.. On January 6th 1922 issue #2 of the Daily Herald newspaper noted that there has been an increase since election night 5% registered voters within five miles radius being "mostly Irish Catholic" although no evidence exists supporting this claim...during Prohibition there were more speakeasies than bars operating in this area...much activity took place inside local churches whereSunday services were often times broadcast live via radio or television…the Orchestra Hall remained open during prohibition serving refreshments through Sunday nights even though the bartenders refused liquor service due to state laws outlawing prostitution on religious grounds

Palos Heights was founded in 1848 by John palos and his brother, Isaac. John's family had come from the village of Palmyra on the west side of the River Raisin. The first settler in what is now Palos Heights was George W. Stephenson, who built a cabin on the east side of the river in 1857. In 1880, Samuel Morse moved to Palos Heights and started a paper mill here that became one of Illinois' largest companies. In 1906, Samuel Morse's grandson, Alfred Vail, bought a controlling interest in the company and renamed it Western Electric Corporation. In 1957, Western Electric merged with Teletypesetter Machines & Supplies Company (Tomes), Inc., which had been founded by two brothers, Harry Trombone and Harold Macmillan. The merger created one of Illinois' leading industrial corporations.
