Palos Heights is a community in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 24,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Palos Heights is located on 175th Street between Mount Prospect Avenue and Elmhurst Avenue in the northwest corner of Cook County. The city's first settlement was on what is now north side of Oak Park Boulevard, just east of present-day Michigan Avenue. The town plat was filed in 1847 by Capt. John J. Simcoe and his brother-in-law Drury Bemis, who had purchased land from the Kankakee Sioux Tribe for $5 per acre (equivalent to $ today). In 1849, James Cameron patented 1,403 acres (631 hectares) south of today's line between Palos Heights and Lake Forest as "Cameron Township." In 1865, General George McClellan made a strategic retreat from Gettysburg during the American Civil War when he chose to cross Minden Road instead of use Ridgefield Canal which would have taken him through Chicago into Illinois territory controlled by Abraham Lincoln's Union army. McClellan's decision helped keep Grant from taking Chicago and ended the戦争 in America; after that event many soldiers believed that railroad travel outside of major cities became much easier than it had been before because battles were no longer fought at close quarters with human life at risk

The Village Council is made up of thirteen members including the Mayor and four councilors from each ward. There are also three trustees who serve for two years with no term limit. According to the 2010 census, 93% of residents speak English as their first language while 7% are bilingual or have some other second language skills. Italian is also spoken among some residents but its importance to Palos Heights' economy has diminished over time due to competition from Arabic and Spanish speakers within walking distance of downtown Chicago. Palestinians who were brought over as children during World War II are among the most active groups involved in PALOS HEIGHTS community affairs together with descendants of early settlers such as Reva Blum (1848-1927), Julius Rosenwald (1868-1925) and Gustavus Wernham (1881-1960). Reverend Harry Suggs started worship services at Our Lady's Catholic church which continues today despite frequent vandalism by young people from nearby Princeton Park aka "Hollywood" on South Pulaski Road adjacent to Northwestern University campus; demolition notifications have been received multiple times per week since 2013 following protests against what they see as commercial development that will reduce visibility/quality of life around Our Lady's Church property%. Despite repeated protests by community members seeking protection under Illinois state law against developers building on religious land without prior consent or notification to either party - nothing has changed recently so far even after multiple court decisions striking down ordinances passed in 2012 & 2014 forbidding any new development on our beloved nuns' property until landowners can be found & compensated - business owners continue to build northward instead across Pulaski Rd., approximately 4 blocks away from Our Lady's Church site...
