Palos Heights is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Palos Heights-Lisle School District covers portions of both towns. The first permanent settler in what would become Palos Heights was Amos DeWitt in 1802. He and his family came from New York City and the vessel "John Adams". In 1807, DeWitt purchased 2 acres (0.8 km²) of land on the south side of present day Harrison Street from Nicholas Hennepin, who had bought it from George Rogers Clark for $500 cash. DeWitt built a log cabin there and named it White Oak Township after one of his trees that grew to large size near his home. In 1809, Amos DeWitt's son Benjamin died suddenly at age 21 while out hunting with some friends on Indian Territory east of modern-day Chicago; this left Palos Heights with two fathers - Amos DeWitt Jr., who continued to live there until his death in 1836, and John Richardson who took over governance until 1840 when he moved to Peoria County so he could be nearer to his young children back in New York City; Richardson also served as Justice of the Peace for Palos Heights municipality until its incorporation into Cook County in 1865). On December 3, 1860, during the American Civil War, Confederate General JF Stuart attacked Union General David Dixon's brigade outside what is now Palos Hills Elementary School; Dixon was killed and many troopers were injured before retreating back inside the schoolhouse which then became known as "Bloody Sunday" because so many people were killed or wounded within its walls by Confederates trying to retake control of crucial Springfield district territory lost during that battle overall which resulted in Lincoln ordering an all out offensive against Confederate forces under General Ulysses S Grant across most eastern Illinois countryside beginning November 15th 1862' - up until that point most military engagements between Union & Confederate forces had been conducted along riverfronts & around major cities such as Cairo & St Louis MO where larger numbers of troops were concentrated while smaller numbers operated behind enemy lines
In 1833, Palos Heights was founded by Captain John F. Ryan and his family. The town was originally named GoldenWest, but was renamed in honor of General George Washington after the American Revolution. The first post office in Palos Heights opened in 1835. In 1869, the Palos Heights Improvement Company was organized to build a railroad through the town. The company failed to complete its project and closed down in 1870. It wasn't until 1919 when the Illinois Central Railroad successfully completed a branch from Joliet to Palos Heights via Crystal Lake. This new line helped revive the economy of Palos Heights and made it more popular with residents and tourists alike. In 1924, Citizens' Park was established in downtown Palos Heights as an open-air public park that is still used today by residents, visitors, and businesses alike.
