Palos Heights, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 51,815 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth most populous city in Cook County and the most populous city on the Chicago metropolitan area. The Palos Hills neighborhood of Palos Heights is also one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Chicago. The city was founded by John Crain in 1855 as a small village called Valley View on a tract of land that had been bought from the local Potawatomi Indians. In 1857, Crain persuaded his fellow officials of Cook County to name the new town after him – Palos Heights – because he felt that it would be more likely to receive financial support from county officials if it were named after him than if it were called something like West Side or North Side. The first post office opened in Palos Heights on December 12, 1857. By 1860, when Illinois became an state, Palos Heights had become one of the largest settlements in Cook County with over 7500 residents. In 1861–1862, during the American Civil War, much of what is now downtown Chicago was burned down by Union forces while they skirmished with Confederate forces nearpresent-day Wabash Avenue and Austin Street (now Fullerton Boulevard). This destroyed part of what is now Grant Park—a park that includes some of Chicagos earliest examples such as Lake Michigan Beach and Buckingham Palace Gardens—but also left behind evidence of what must have been some very lively streetscape activity: For example Austin Street still bears several streetcar tracks which can be seen running along its length today;Wabash Avenue still features impressive mansard roofs typical of old Chicago buildings; and Grant Park itself still retains many Of course these views are all dwarfed by todays skyscrapers and other forms of development but during those days this “old” Chicago looked very different from today’s skyline

The Palos Heights, Illinois community dates back to 1847. The original settlers were the descendants of Christopher Palos, who arrived in this area from Hungary in 1811. By 1850, there were about 20 residents living in what is now Palos Heights. In 1872, when the tracks of the Illinois Central Railroad were built through this area, many residents left for good and founded the city of Joliet in central Illinois. The remaining residents of Palos Heights brought their traditions and customs with them when they moved to Joliet. They formed a town board and set up their own schools, churches and businesses. In 1919, the United States government purchased 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of land northwest of Palos Heights from John Atherton for $5,000. This was used as a military training ground during World War I and later became known as Camp Grant after General George Custer’s death in battle at that location in 1901. After World War II ended, Camp Grant was converted into a civilian school campus known as Parkland College Prep School. Today it is home to several local businesses and is also used for private events by Parkland College Prep School students and staff. Palos Heights experienced some large changes during its history- first occurred when it became an incorporated village on November 3rd, 1912; second occurred when it amalgamated with neighboring townships on April 14th of that year; third occurred when it was annexed by Joliet on October 5th, 1923; fourth occurred when it became an independent city on December 1st of that year; fifth occurs upon its incorporation into Cook County on January 1st 1924; sixth occurs upon its annexation into DuPage County on February 12th 1927- all discussed further hereinbelow under “History Of The City Of Palos Heights” heading: In recent decades however much progress has been made since then including current subdivisions such as Forest Glen Estates which straddles both sides of I-55 just north of downtown while still maintaining close ties to its historic center while also incorporating modern amenities such as a library system and new high-rise homes developments nearby: With all these advancements along with continuing growth potential however much more work still needs to be done before becoming one of America's most vibrant cities once again!
