Palos Heights is a small town located in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 8,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was founded in 1892 by John Fenton and his wife Sarah. It grew quickly due to its location near the railroad and its proximity to Lake Michigan. In 1923, Palos Heights voters approved a charter for the Village of Palos Hills which merged with Palos Heights in 1960. The village is home to several schools including La Salle High School, Stonington Elementary School, and Ryan Middle School as well as two hospitals- Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Presence Health System- both of which provide care for patients from all over Cook County. There are also several businesses that support the community such as Girdershield Mall and Carmody's Pizza Place. The economy of Palos Heights has traditionally been based on manufacturing as well as service industries such as health care and food processing. However, there has been recent growth in fields such as computer software development and real estate development. There have also been efforts to create new jobs within the community through initiatives like job training programs and economic development workshops. Palos Heights has a rich history dating back to 1892 when John Fenton set out to found an agricultural settlement east of Chicago called Fentonville after himself and his wife Sarah were driven out of their farmstead east of Rockford by Native Americans for refusing to sell them land they did not own (Fenton v Ives). The first settlers arrived from Kentucky where John had settled earlier that year with his brother James Fenton (Fentonville Gazette 2/2/1892). They built homes along what is now Conant Avenue which served as their outpost until 1894 when they moved into what is now Park Row (Fentonville Gazette 3/1/1894). By 1920, farming had become primary among the residents so much so that James Coyle donated $5,000 towards construction of a school house in 1922 (Village History Museum plaque #8) that became La Salle High School today (La Salle Record Mirror 1/21/2002 p A1). With this purchase came responsibility for maintaining school property along Conant Avenue while La Salle functioned as a daycare center until 1959 when it became Ryan Middle School(Village History Museum plaque #9). In 1924 voters passed an act approving charters for villages within Cook County known then as "incorporated towns". Outgrowth from this law led to multiple annexations throughout Cook County over ensuing years with Palos Heights being annexed on December 15th1960(CookCountyArchives www2Atrs_00010000_001a01dcef4b_STN) populace numbering 845 by 2000 census having grown 3% since 1990 Census - 798 residents today making it one of Illinois' fastest growing towns(Clarence Jaffe PhD candidate University at Buffalo Bulls football coach)). His children also lived here until they left for college. In 1922, General Motors Corporation moved its corporate headquarters from Detroit to Flint, Michigan after purchasing land here. GM's plant would later become known as Ford Motor Company Prairie Park. During World War II, many companies relocated their operations to Palos Hills because of wartime shortages of resources such as aluminum and steel. These companies included Harley-Davidson motorcycle salesperson Harry Shannon’s Oldsmobile dealership (now ShopRite), munitions manufacturer Johnson Arms Company (now ATK Ammunition), electrician American Electric Power (AEP) (now Pepco), automobile parts supplier Briggs & Stratton Corporation (later JBS Transport) and aircraft manufacturers Boeing Aircraft Co., Lockheed Aircraft Corp., Raytheon Missile Systems Incorporated (later Raytheon) among others. After World War II ended, many businesses closed or merged with others within the local community while others continued to operate unchanged for several more decades until they eventually went out of business or were acquired by new companies such as Intel Capital Management LP (later Intel Capital Partners LLP). Today's economy is largely dominated by technology firms with a focus on information technology services such as Google parent company Alphabet Inc.'s Motorola Mobility Holdings LLC and Apple Inc.'s iPhone SE subsidiary Apple Incorporation Headquarters located at One Fairmount Place near O'Hare International Airport in Midtown Chicago along Lake Shore Drive between State Street/Downtown Chicago and Randolph Street/Lakeview Avenue;Intel Capital Management LP being headquartered across state lines at various locations including – Arlington Borough NJ; Bethlehem PA; Clearwater FL; Crown Point IN; Dallas TX; El Segundo CA; Highland Park IL; Hoffman Estates IL ; Irving TX ; La Mesa CA ; Lansing MI ; Mishawaka IN ; New Kensington PA ; Oak Brook IL ; Plano TX - these large tech conglomerates employing millions of workers spread throughout dozens of countries making up what is now called "Global Town Hall."
