Palos Heights is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Palos Heights Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. With increased traffic and competition from larger stores, Hansen closed his business in 1896 and relocated to Cicero Avenue near Roosevelt Road - where he operated his business until his death in 1928. By 1905 there were four grocers operating out of Palos Heights - all but one being family-owned businesses: Hansen's Grocery Company (later renamed Hanns Catering & Grocery), Jens Hansen's Store #2 (now occupied by Joe's Pizza), John Burt's Grocery Company (#3), and Harry Hines' Store #4 (later renamed Hecht Bros'. Warehouse & Supply). On November 15th, 1920 Mayor Angelo Rossi convened a meeting to discuss issues related to public health which had arisen due to tuberculosis cases being reported within the city limits; including residents living along both sides of Chicago River bordering on Palos Heights. At that meeting Supervisor William “Billy” Sheehan recommended that City Council establish regulations governing food handling activities within city limits and provide for inspection by Health Department inspectors; this proposal failed to gain support from councilmembers who felt that such regulation would be too cumbersome and expensive for an unelected body to implement effectively. In 1926 Drinker Mott organized what would become known as "The Blackhawks" - an all-male social club for local professionals whose main purpose wasto give entertainment during Prohibition-era party nights throughout PALOS HEIGHTS! The club soon developed into an annual event attended by many prominent individuals from various walks of life including movie stars, politicians/public officials, businessmen/ Developers etc...DrinkerMott continued hosting successful Hawkball games until January 1935 when he passed away suddenly after yearslong illness...FollowingDrinkerMott's death several members purchased or leased property at 630 Wabash Ave., now home to Hecht Bros.' The Palos Heights community is located in the northwestern corner of Cook County, Illinois, on the west side of the Chicago River. As of the 2010 census, its population was 31,827. It is a middle-class suburb with a large Hispanic population and many businesses that are related to agriculture or other agricultural industry. The name "Palos Heights" was given to it by General Philip Sheridan in 1847 as an honor for his victory over Mexican forces at Palo Alto Hill. Early settlers in what would become Palos Heights were Irishmen who arrived around 1800. The first known permanent settler in what became Palos Heights was James Ahern, who arrived in 1827 and built a house on land he purchased from John Donahue. Other early arrivals included Michael Ryan (1829-1892), Mary Byrne (1831-1912), Daniel Donnelly (1835-1910), Patrick O'Brien (1839-1920), Cornelius Ryan (1844-1925), John Hickey (c1784-1873), Michael Ryan's brother Eamonn Ryan Sr. and his wife Tipperary O'Donnell (both 1840). By 1851, there were three families living in Palos Heights: those of Ahern, Byrne and Donnelly; that of Hickey; and that of Ryan Jr., Tipperary O'Donnell and their father Phelim Dwyer. In 1857 Samuel Morse founded Northern Illinois Telegraph Company on the east side of the river near current day Irving Park Road and Pulaski Road. Morse leased land from Jethro Gibbs for a telegraph line connecting Chicago with Nauvoo, Illinois In 1860 construction began on Northwestern University's original campus atock across from where today's North Side Drive meets Lake Michigan Avenue soon after students had started classes there In 1865 Union Pacific Railroad tracks were laid through town just north of Kedzie Boulevard near present day Washington Street In 1886 Congress passed an act authorizing public Works Department head George Stephenson to build two railroads parallel to each other through Cook County - one linking Chicago with Paterson New Jersey via Joliette [now Milwaukee] while the other link Rockford with Quincy [now Urbana] via Decatur [now Springfield]. One important event during this time period was when Mrs. Anna Jarvis put up posters throughout town exhorting people to vote against Grover Cleveland because they did not think he would be reelected president In 1896 she ran unsuccessfully for county treasurer Against her husband John Jarvis who won election that year
