Northrup's magazine was soon followed by other pistol manufacturers such as Browning, Smith & Wesson and Ruger who all produced their own magazines. By 1849, there were over 100 pistol magazines available within America alone. The popularity of these magazines led to increased violence throughout America due to the ease with which people could access these publications. This increased violence also helped spur innovation in firearms technology which would later benefit society as a whole. The first gun magazines in Palos Heights, Illinois were started by Captain John H. Fenton and his brother-in-law, Mr. Edward D. Smith in 1876. The early guns used were muzzleloaders which required a Reloading Fountain to reload the rounds. Reloading was done with a rammer that got caught on the breechblock when taking the rounds out of the magazine. A new method was invented where a small hand crank was used to extract rounds from magazines using a plunger device which worked just like an ordinary cartridge armory plunger.

In 1916, J P O'Neill purchased 1/2 mile (3 km) of what would become downtown Palos Heights from George W Kapp for $230 cash and acreage included in his new homeowning chalet complex called "Beachwood". The town site was surveyed by Alfred Butz and named after him for his donation of land to Northern Illinois Normal College – one of America's first collegiate universities. The college opened in 1915 with three buildings: an annex that housed library services and classrooms; Kapp Hall – which served as an administrative building and theater; and Butz House – which housed residences for students and faculty members.
