Between 1858 and 1860, Palmerstonia had three school districts: Hegewisch-Palmyra-Niles West School District #1; Hegewisch-Palmyra-Niles South School District #2; andHegewisch-Palmyra-Streator East School District #3 (later renamed Union Carbide North Side School District). In 1892, the village of Hegewisch merged into the new town of Palos Heights. Today, much of what made Palmerstonia such an important community have continued to thrive in Palos Heights – including its shopping district called “The Well” which features large chains like Sears & Roebuck as well as independently owned boutiques and clothing stores. The city also features several high-quality housing estates including President Donald Trump National Golf Club at Roslyn Ridge and Rookwood Manor developments that are home to some of Chicago’s wealthiest families.

In 1871, the city of Palos Heights was founded by John P. Rickey and his family. The Rickeys were the first white people to settle in the area and they built a home on the current site of South Bend Drive. In 1876, Rickey organized a local cooperative society, which became known as the Palos Heights Home Society. The society helped to build homes for workers in the city and also provided social services such as food and housing. In 1913, Palos Heights was annexed by Chicago and became part of the new city. The population of Palos Heights grew rapidly during its incorporation into Chicago, with dozens of new homes being built in what is now south central Illinois. By 1925, Palos Heights had reached a population of over 100,000 residents and it continued to grow throughthe years until it merged with Hinsdale Township in 2006 to form Hinsdale-Palos Heights Township.
