Palos Heights is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 508 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Illinois and the second-largest city in Chicago after Chicago. Palos Heights is located on the northwest side of Chicago and straddles the border of Cook County to the south. The area now known as Palos Heights was settled by Germans in 1847. The first post office in what is now Palos Heights was established in 1851. In 1882, Palos Hills Township was organized from parts of Cicero Township and Addison Township. In 1893, part of Cicero Township (the easternmost portion) became part of Palos Heights when it merged with other townships within Cook County. In 1905, an act to give cities their own police forces passed by the legislature and went into effect; this act allowed for the incorporation of new municipalities within Cook County including Palos Heights. On October 15, 1915 – one day after being incorporated as a city – Palos Heights had its first mayoralty election with John Whelan being elected over incumbent Charles Hickey by a vote of 35 to 21%. On November 3rd 1915, Mayor Whelan delivered his inaugural address which included remarks about how "this great new city will be built not only upon honest industry but also upon social service." The following year saw another milestone for Palos Heights when it became home to Chicago's world's first municipal water system thanks to work done by Mayor Whelan and City Engineer George Fenton-Higgins together with contributions from individuals and businesses across downtown Chicago. This system provided drinking water to residents throughout much of north central Illinois until 1978 when Lake Michigan replaced drained surface water systems statewide through various pipeline projects completed during Mayor Richard Morman's term (1983-1991). On November 7th 1935, President Franklin D Roosevelt made his final visit to Illinois while living in Hyde Park before leaving for New York City; he spoke at a meeting held at venerable Palmer House on West 59th Street where he announced plans for infrastructure development that would include building a expressway through Chicagos North Side extending into Oak Lawn Cemetery where Roosevelt had buried many friends including former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt who lived nearby on West 63rd Street– today's Obama Presidential Library & Museum! This expressway would have become known as FDR Drive today but never happened due to opposition from local landowners who felt that increased traffic level along this roadway would disrupt their residential neighborhoods instead! After hearing about these plans from Roosevelt aides Harry Hopkins and James Byrnes headed up an investigation into possible public corruption linked to this road project; they found no evidence however that any abuse took place during these alleged land dealings! Upon returning home from his trip Harry Hopkins made recommendations for further action including appointing a special committee specifically charged with investigating these allegations however nothing came of this plan either! In 1948 - two years after President Harry S Truman accomplished similar infrastructure development - construction began on what would eventually become Kenwood Boulevard which runs parallel to FDR Drive today and forms part of Northwestern Universitys Loop Campus Extension project! Today’s White Sox baseball stadium ( worn down ) along Kenwood Boulevard marks one end point of this once lengthy project! Other notable landmarks located within or around modern day Palios Halls include: Stroud Hall Library/Student Center (opened in 1997), American Life Insurance Company Building /City Hall (opened in 1970), Palmer House (/West 59th Street), Saint Ambrose Catholic Church (/Lake View Terrace), Holy Cross Seminary (/Wicker Park), Union Carbide Company /Zion Gate Plaza/, Sears Tower (/Harvey Milk Plaza)), Loyola Marymount University /Chicago Business School/Northwestern University's Loop Campus Extension project (. . .)
