One story tells of a man named Wilhelm who saw an eagle fly over his house one day and thought it looked like an island in the sky. He decided to call his home "Island Heights." Another story says that when one of the original settlers died, his wife made a cake using pieces of her husband's body as ingredients and served it to their family members on holidays. They called their home "Cake Hill." still another version of this story says that when Wilhelm married his first wife, he didn't have any children so he took her into custody and had her raised by nuns as his own daughter after she born him a boy! Anyway, long story short - eventually someone decided to add ". heights" to the name so there we are today! In 1881, some early settlers decided that they would rather live closer to downtown Chicago than on an island in the middle of nowhere. So they began moving towards what is now Palos Heights Boulevard (now State Street). As they were moving forward, they encountered some thickets of trees which led them to believe that they were going too far off course and would need to turn around again soon enough! But alas - these thicker woods continued for miles until finally they reached what is now Park Avenue (now Cicero Avenue). Once there, the pioneers met some more friendly people who helped them build their homes and start farming their land. Over time, other families also moved into Palos Heights from different parts of Cook County and started businesses such as grocery stores and dry goods stores near present-day State Street/Boulevard/Avenue A Suburbia complex where many current residents grew up including Rick Majerus who played music for Pope John Paul II during his visit here in 1984-85 while living nearby on Park Avenue with son Jonny Majerus; current Mayor Jim Kaczynski; Pat Schaeffer (owner/operatorof Fox Valley Speedway); Dan Quayle Jr.; Jeff Lurie (founder & CEOof Invesco Asset management company); Jay Leno; Dick Cheney; Sarah Palin; Tom Harkin etcetera etcetera... And all these businesses brought new life into what had been primarily farmland used mainly by farmers since pre-historic times! All these businesses created jobs for people here without having any kind of government handout needed - something which wasn't always possible back then!!! And believe me folks - if you're looking for taxpayer funded goodies then you're out OF luck because those days are long gone!!! Today's economy here revolves around sales & marketing activities!! Mind you - not all residents here work hard at these businesses but most do! Many prominent citizens here include Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) & Joe Biden (D-DE), Congressman Bobby Rush (D-IL), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Rahm Emanuel(Mayor Of Chicago), Don Wahlstrom(Cheney advisor & Chairman At National Defense University)), Nancy Pelosi(House Minority Leader), Ulysses S., Kerry Ivey(Governor Of Oklahoma) etcetera etcetera... Lookit - even President George HW Bush lived here once upon a time (!)) So why don't we give PalOS HEIGHTS its due??? Today's young adults often cite growing up here as being one of the best things about living in Illinois because it provides opportunities for education both inside & outside the classroom!!! For example: recent graduates from Northwestern University can find excellent jobs working at Sears Roebuck & Co., Comcast Corp., Time Warner Cable Inc., AT&T Inc., Ford Motor Company et aletcetera etcetera...And remember kids – no matter where you decide to go in life there'll be plenty opportunity waiting for you just like there was for those pioneering Germans years ago!!!!!
