Palatine, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Palatine community was founded on December 11, 1836 by Captain John S. Griggs and his family as a station on the Chicago and Western Railroad. The town boundaries were set at what are now Navy Pier Road and Pulaski Road to the east and north, while Dearborn Avenue ran along the west side of what is now Lake Shore Drive. In 1855, Griggs donated land for a school district which became known as Griggs Township; PalatineElementary School opened in 1870. In 1892, Griggs gave another parcel of land for a church which became Holy Name Cathedral (now St. Patrick's Cathedral). On March 15, 1907, Mayor James Fenton unveiled a new plan to improve transportation in Cook County that called for the construction of four miles (6 km) of expressways—the first such project in Cook County history—on lands that had been part of Griggs Township since before it was organized as a municipality. The $3 million project was completed in 1909 and named after him; today it is known as I-90 or "Griggs Boulevard". In 1916–1917 an influenza pandemic swept through Chicago causing high numbers of deaths; many residents left their homes for weeks or even months at a time to avoid becoming infected. Many people who stayed behind lost everything they owned including their home and businesses: when demand for goods available outside city limits grew too high following repairs to roads caused by snow plows working over railroad tracks during winter 1918–1919, prices for groceries went up 20% overnight due to shortages caused by these events alone! In recent years, however, it has been struggling to maintain its status as a local community. The history of Palatine begins with two men named John Sargent and Samuel Leaipzig. They were both natives of Prussia who came to America in 1815 seeking fortune and adventure. John Sargent became an entrepreneur and started a ferry service from Kankakee on Lake Michigan to Chicago. He also founded the first cotton gin in Chicago. Samuel Leaipzig joined him soon after and together they started various businesses including Mercantile Exchange & Trust Company (later Sears Roebuck & Co.) and Cook County Road Commission (later Cook County government). In 1847, John Sargent married Anna Maria Schlosser-Kirschbaum, daughter of Count Friedrich Wilhelm Franziskus Kessler-Schlosser (1785-1851), an advisor to Emperor Francis II of Austria who had visited America several times between 1846-48! Anna Maria was born at Pritzkerhausen Abbey near Frankfurt am Main on October 10th, 1795/6; she died young at age 25 on November 5th, 1888 at her home at 4117 Wabash Avenue fashionable east Side neighborhood west side section southwesterly corner lot number 20 west side street name unknown but very close by!), so German immigrants did not have any offspring with this particular immigrant family!
