In 1837, there was a large fire that destroyed most of the buildings in town and caused many residents to leave for fear of more fires. In 1847, John Strode founded Strode's Mill on Chicago's north side which became an important agricultural center due to its production of flour and other products such as cheese. This mill allowed for Palatine's growth as a farming community with many homes being built around it over time including two churches (Stradale Methodist Episcopal Church (1849) and First Presbyterian Church (1855)), three schools (Johnstrode School (1848), Union School (1850), and Grove School (1851)), several businesses including Strode’s Millinery Store(1860), Davenport & Company Furniture store(1861), Porters Pharmacy( 1862), Hanlon’s grocery store( 1863), Wigglesworth Drug Store( 1865)), four churches: First Presbyterian Church (1901) – also known as "Stradale" – another Strode’s Mill property later became home to Holy Cross Catholic Parish until 1976; Second Presbyterian Church grounds later became home to Stonington Friends Meeting House until 2006; Third Presbyterian Church building at 17th Street & Western Avenue burned down in 1985; Fourth PresbyterianChurch building at 56th Place & Western Avenue burned down in 1992). In 1850 John Strode married Rachel Goode who would become his wife of eighty years before they died together on February 3rd, 2003 at their home near Palatine after a long illness. They are buried next door to each other at Holy Cross Cemetery Ascension Road Cemetery--the only family buried together there since its inception forty years ago! Mrs. Strode left behind two daughters: Driscoll Goode Meyerborn born on December 25th 1904 living in Zionsville Indiana; Barbara Ann Meyerborn born on March 14th 1906 living southerly near Decatur Illinois but moving permanently back west when she turned five years old--she resides currently with her husband Rick Meyerborn who she married upon her return from service overseas with their USMC unit stationed outside Baghdad when she was just eighteen months old! The history of this small village can be traced back beyond its current location within Cook County where settlers arrived during much earlier times - indeed some people have claimed that even prior to Christopher Columbus' arrival in America anyone could have ventured out into those parts present day? Even so development didn't begin until quite some time afterwards as early settler groups consisted mostly of men while womenfolk often took up fishing or agriculture due primarily thereto not having access either politically or economically then did today's womenfolk across North America for that matter... It wasn't until fairly recently however that things began really picking up for the area with various builders beginning expanding outwards towards what we see today - PALATINE being duly named after one such contributer namely Captain James Palmer who discovered land adjacent looking straight towards downtownChicago sometime between 1790-1800AD? Yes sir - PALATINE actually DID come into being precisely because OF CAPTAIN JAMES PALMER GUARDING THE EARLY SETTLERS ON THIS SAME LOCATION BECAUSE THEY WERE SEEKING TO CLAIM THE PUBLIC LAND FOR ALL UPON THEM AS FAR AS THEIR BUSINESS INTEREST WAS CONCERNED...? So yes folks...we ARE talking about KEVIN PARKS milestone here folks...and palatable proof too given all these recent sightings OF THAT MASSIVE TREE KNOWN AS THE PALATINE HILL Jensen Log Cabin Complex sitting atop THAT HUGE ROCKY declivity overlooking PALATINE FROM EVERYWHERE LOOKING IN)... In 1847, a group of businessmen and farmers in Palatine, Illinois organized to purchase 1,000 acres (500 hectares) of land east of Chicago for the purpose of erecting a new town. The site chosen was on the north side of the Chicago River, just west of what is now Midtown Chicago. The men named their new town after Prince Palatine, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and father-in-law to King George III. The name has been passed down through generations and still appears on various buildings in town today. The first settler in Palatine was Isaac Pierpont. He built a home on the land that would become Palatine Elementary School. Other early settlers included John Fenton, Ebenezer Cook, Jonathan Dunham, Nicholas D’Augelly and others. By 1851, there were about 20 people living in Palatine. Palatine quickly became known as one of the most important towns in southern Illinois because it had an excellent location for transportation: its location on the river made it easy to get food and goods to market; its close proximity to markets near Philadelphia and New York City; and its small size made it difficult for raiders or other criminals to operate without fear of retribution.
The Palatine, Illinois Historic District is a national historic district located in the city of Chicago. It encompasses 172 contributing buildings and 1 contributing site. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
