Founded in 1834 by Nicholas palatine, an Italian immigrant, Palatine quickly became known for its fine farming land andits thriving trade center. The area now known as Palatine was originally part of the Town of Cookstown which was located on the west side of the Rock River. In 1851, Cookstown merged with neighboring Village of Mount Prospect to form the current village of Palatine. The early residents of Palatine were mainly farmers who grew corn, wheat, beans, fruits and vegetables. The town had several brick buildings built in response to increasing demand for building materials due to its location on high ground near many rivers and lakes. In 1881, George Pullen opened a grocery store in what is now downtown Palatine which quickly became one of the leading grocery stores in Illinois. This Store soon developed into one ofPalatines largest businesses with over 50 employees. During World War II, the store conducted extensive military salesOperation Victory Over Japan which led to it being named Illinois Retailer Of The Year by Business Week magazine in 1945. One important event that took place during this time was when Mayor Edward J. Byrne formed a committee to study ways to improve traffic congestion on Ulysses S Grant Boulevard in downtown Chicago and came up with a plan which would eventually be implemented as PTA #1 (People To People Traffic Improvement). This project helped reduce traffic congestion around downtown Chicago for years and made it possible for pedestrians and cyclists to easily get around without having their feet touchthe ground
The Palatine neighborhood of Illinois was founded in 1837 by John Todd and his family. The area around the current-day intersection of Washington Street and Elm Street became part of Springfield after the United States Congress moved to Springfield in 1795. The Todds were among the first settlers in what is now the Palatine neighborhood, which developed gradually over time. When Illinois became a state in 1818, most of what is now Palatine Township was included within Kankakee County. In 1837,Todd sold some land to James Cameron, who established a farm there called Cameronville. This early location served as a commercial center for much of Kankakee County until it was supplanted by nearby Carbondale in the mid-19th century. In 1838, Samuel Latham bought land north of present-day Elm Street and built a home there that remains standing today. He later renamed it "Latham House." Latham ran an inn and tavern near this location for many years before selling it to Isaiah Smith in 1865. In 1850, Elijah Childs purchased three acres northwest of present-day Washington Street from Jeremiah Dixon for $100; he named this tract "Child's Valley". Childs built several homes here before dying in 1861 at age 70. His widow continued to occupy the house until her death in 1916. Bessie Childs Calderone lived on this property from 1916 until her death in 1984; she was one of Illinois' last white women to own land outside downtown Chicago proper. The Garden District Museum opened its doors on West Randolph Avenue adjacent to Child's Valley on October 1, 1984; it is one of only two museums open to the public within city limits (the other being Chicago Cultural Center).
