The townsite that would become Palatine was surveyed in 1847 by George Stephenson from his design using plans prepared by Anthony Wayne. The name "Palatine" was chosen to honor General James Kasky who had helped engineer the western expansion of the United States during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). Kasky had also been instrumental in helping to found numerous small towns throughout Illinois during this time period including Crystal Lake and Elgin. During its early years, Palatine consisted of only a few homes and businesses. By 1850, however, it had reached its current size with over 100 homes and businesses situated along State Street between Cook Road and Cicero Road today

When they discovered that Illinois extended all the way to Missouri—a territory claimed by both countries—the U.S. government decided that it would be a better investment to annex this new state into the Union than try to fight for it separately. The incorporation of Chicago into the Union made Illinois one of the most heavily populated and economically developed regions in America.
