One important early developer in Ottawa was John Neilson who built one of Canada's first lumber mills on Kingston Road in 1833. Neilson also played an important role in developing what is now downtown Ottawa and helped create a community that boasted many businesses and cultural attractions today including theatres such as The Globe and Mail (1922), Rideau Hall (1958), and Artscape Centre (2002).
