The Ottawa Rifle Club was founded in 1892. The club is a member-owned and operated organization that has been playing host to rifle matches, trapshooting contests, and other shooting events since its inception. The club has two rifles - a Model 1861 Springfield rifle and a Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle - which it turns out to be quite an interesting history topic all together! The Model 1861 Springfield rifle was designed by George Stephenson in 1858. It served as the service rifle for the Union army during the American Civil War. Although only 736 were ever made, these rifles were very popular with both civilians and military personnel due to their simplicity of construction and relatively low cost of ownership. The Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle was also designed by George Stephenson in 1858. It became one of the most popular rifles for civilian use because it was notably easier to operate than other Firearms Regulations era firearms such as the muzzleloader or musket. This firearm saw continuing popularity into the 20th century thanks to its convenience, accuracy, and ease of maintenance. In fact, many people still own this weapon today!

Today there are many attractions within or close to downtown Ottawa including: Parliament Hill where Canada's Parliament meets; Central Park which includes several art galleries and parks like Mount Royal Park; Carleton University’s North Campus; Rideau Hall which houses Canada’s Supreme Court; The Old Post Office building which served as both parliament house and main post office from 1856 until 1952 before being knocked down for redevelopment into Hyatt Regency hotel later that decade; The Rideau Canal which bisected central downtown before being converted into an expressway in 1998; StLawrence Cathedral where Pope Francis was once married during his visit to Canada in 2015; Ascot Racecourse where horse racing takes place annually culminating with the world championships each fall); The Golden Horseshoe Casino just west of town centre across from Confederation Place Shopping Centre;;[1] Our Lady Help Of Christians Parish Church--a basilica dedicated especially to Mary Help Of Christians who have been important figures in Catholic life around this area since 1622,[2][3]and numerous other smaller neighbourhoods including Grosse Pointe Woods (just west of Downtown), Orillia (just southwest of town centre), Rossmere (northwest off I-90), Mississauga (southwestof town center), Belleville (northwest off I-75) etc., making it one significant city on a relatively small continent!
