When the Canadian Forces were first organized in 1939, they had to find a way to protect their officers and enlisted men. The answer came in the form of handguns. Lieutenant Colonel John A. Macdonald, Commandant of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, decided that handguns would be the primary weapon used by the CFP. He ordered two pistols from Colt Canada and gave them to Major-General James H. Neill as part of a gift for his inauguration as Commandant. The Canadian Forces also began using holster guns in World War II. Holsters became more important during the Cold War because it was difficult for anyone other than police officers and military members to carry firearms openly without having them confiscated or being banned by their respective governments. In 1984, the RCMP discontinued production of holster guns due to low demand and replaced them with rifles instead. Since holsters are not normally carried on their person like pistols are, they have frequently been mistaken for firearms when discovered by law enforcement officials or civilians who are unaware that they are not actually related to either type of firearm. This has led to some humorous moments over the years when people have mistakenly reported seeing either a pistol or a rifle when they merely saw someone wearing a holster gun!

The City had been planning for what would become downtown Toronto since at least 1897 when Mayor John Graves Simcoe proposed annexing part of Toronto eastward to make way for an enlarged new city with all the benefits that this would bring such as: access to transportation; jobs; schools; easy access to markets; parks; public health services; etc.; but no realized plan emerged until 1909 when newspaper editor George Brown recommended annexationist Councillor Claude McKay submit a map entitled "Toronto - A Plan for Progress." This map showed two possible areas for incorporation - name “Ottawa” after then-prime minister Sir John Acheson who had just resigned from his post due to illness – or be combined with north Parkdale – another planned amalgamation which never happened because councillor McKay died before any action could be taken on his behalf[5]. By 1915 Ottawa was already Recognized as an Important American City due largely to its growing population density and lack thereof competing with New York City or Chicago on this important frontiersale stage where growth was key not only economically but socially as well[6]. Although many observers thought that larger metropolitan centers were inevitable given advances in communication technology [7], few expected smaller towns like Ottawahtoinwould achieve similar levels cf development within such short periodiexcept perhaps for nearby Buffalo where industrialization began soon afterward
