Gun barrels have a long and varied history in Ottawa, Illinois. In 1854, the first gun barrel in Ottawa was made of oak. The barrel was donated by Captain John A. Macdonald and it was used to shoot arrows at the then Royal Canadian Mounted Police's rifle range. In 1865, the Ottawa Gun Club was formed and they began shooting pistols out of barrels made of hickory wood. By 1875, most gun barrel manufacturers in Ottawa were using cast iron or bronze instead of oak for their barrels. However, until around 1900, all guns fired with shot from muzzle-loading firearms were still fired with cannon shot from old cannons found throughout the area - these projectiles would be hurled through a leather sling over the shoulder into a small hole in the top of the cannon where an oxidizing agent would ignite it and cause pieces to fly out which would become projectiles again (see photo below). In 1898, Canada underwent its first census and as part of that process, all guns needed to be registered with police forces across Canada. As part of this process, police departments collected data on each individual's ownership and use of firearms. One such department that gathered data on firearm ownership in Ottawa was the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). As a result of this census information, OPP began production of drums filled with lead shot called "gun balls". These balls were dropped off at gunsmiths across town who would then cast them into ingots and produce firearms barrels for sale to law enforcement agencies throughout Ontario. By 1906 however, all handgun sales within Ontario had been banned due to pressure from London Mayor Hogg who felt that handguns should only be used for self-defense purposes not for hunting or target practice! This ban however did nothing to stop demand for cast iron or bronze guns as people continued to purchase them regardless! The following year saw another change when Parliament passed The Firearms Act which allowed individuals wishing to purchase handguns (other than shotguns) up until .380 calibers (the size now commonly referred to as " pistol") to do so without having previously acquired a license from either the RCMP or local governments! This new legislation also exempted shotguns from registration but reinstated handgun registration requirements for other types of rifles and shotguns! This law change spawned many entrepreneurs who lobbied Parliament hard in order to get their products Registerd under this new legislation - some even succeeded in getting their product registrations accepted despite being against government policy! With this newfound freedom came increased opportunities for businesses like John Brown & Co., Ltd., who became one of the largest cast iron barrel manufacturers in Canada thanks largely thereto!
