Oswego, Illinois is a small town in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,500 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. Oswego was founded in 1837 by John C. Reynolds and his family. It was originally called Hennepin Creek Settlement because most of the settlers were from Minnesota and Dakota Territory. In 1842, Oswego became an independent village under the jurisdiction of Jens Christensen parish in Cook County. On July 1, 1847, it merged with nearby McLean to form what is now Jo Daviess County.[1] The first store in Oswego was built on East Main Street by John Reynolds in 1837. By 1840, there were four stores and two livery stables in Oswego Village. The first post office opened on December 10th, 1840,[2] and remained open until 1889 when it was moved to Springfield.[3] The population of OsweGO reached 2200 by 1860; however this figure does not include the residents who moved to other towns within Jo Daviess County during that time period[4].During the late 1800s through into the 1920s many farmers ran their farms using teams of oxen pulling plows which left deep furrows along the fields; these impressions (known as "osgoode" or "osgow") are still seen throughout much of rural eastern Jo Davisiss Counties today due to heavy farming efforts during that time period[5]. Farming did not completely change until after World War II when large-scale machine operations took over[6]. One such operation that had a significant impact on American farming during this time period was Monsanto’s introduction of corn seed production onto American soil via its “Monsanto process” which began operating at Monsanto Research Station near Quincy, IL in 1922[7]. This innovation led to a major increase in corn acreage across America as well as an increase in prices for food products due to higher yields achieved through modern plant breeding techniques[8]; this development has also been referred to as “the great Corn Rush” [9][10]. In addition to its agricultural significance during this time period,[11],OsweGO also played a significant role in local politics[12]: beginning with its incorporation intoJoDaviessCounty onJuly 1st1847,[13][14][15]), OsoGO quickly developed close ties with neighboring cities includingSpringfieldand McLeanbefore eventually becoming an official county seat on October 15th1889.[16] Today OsoGO remains home to a thriving communityBanking industry has become increasingly important since deregulation ;energy production from oil shale has recently become more common;manufacturing and services have taken up some portions ofthe landscapeAspallard Park offers excellent opportunities for education
The village of Oswego was founded in 1847 by George and Julia Sleeper. It was named for the Oswego River, which is located in the town of Oswego. The Sleeper family operated a mill here until it closed in 1888. In 1907, the village became part of Rockford, Illinois.
