Oswego is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,403 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Oswego was Nicholas Sears, who arrived in 1836. He and his family built a log cabin on the east side of the creek where they later named their settlement after Oswego Lake in New York State. The first town meeting was held on November 1, 1837 and it voted to name the new community "Oswego." In 1840, John Noble opened a small store in Oswego and soon began to grow crops that he sold to buyers throughout Illinois. By 1850, Noble had built a frame house on Main Street which served as the town's first courthouse and jail until 1865 when it burned down. A new courthouse was constructed at what is now Fourth Street and Elmira Avenue in 1872; this building served as the town hall until 1915 when it burned down again. In 1909, Oswego passed an ordinance forbidding discrimination against blacks in all areas of public life; this ordinance remains effective today. In 1907-08, Kenneth Gentry donated land for use as a high school football stadium which would become known as Gentry Stadium; Gentry also donated money for other village facilities such as libraries and schools (including one which became known simply as "Gentry Elementary School"). The original buildings for Gentry Stadium were constructed between 1908-10 with funds contributed by Gentry himself; these structures still stand today and are used by local high school students during plays/events). During World War I, many residents serve in military service- some even being drafted- leaving their families behind to support them while they are away; these sacrifices are commemorated through annual Memorial Day ceremonies held at Gentry Stadium.
