By 1840, there were 20 residents living in Oswego Township with Stephenson as their headman; he later became its first postmaster (1855). During the American Civil War (1861–1865), most residents supporting Union forces worked east of the Mississippi River while those located near Springfield fought for General Ulysses S Grant’s army; however, some residents did cross over into Confederate territory to help support Richmond’s cause. Some homes within present day downtown OsweGOt were commandeered by Confederate forces during this time period; however all occupants surrendered upon learning about Union intentions shortly before battle began. When Northwestern University moved to its new campus east of town in 1928, much backlash occurred because many people who had supported NU when it first moved felt left out when their school relocated more than 1 mile away from them – especially since northerners made up only 15% of OSWEGO's population at that time . After some back and forth between local officials and university officials over access to essential services such as water and trash service inside town limits (the latter being addressed through an ordinance passed by city council), NU finally relocates its main building without any issue in 1961 . Many aspects associated with priorNU lifeindaude such as murals displayed throughout town center financed primarily through private donations rather than university money remain today despite efforts by both NU administrators and local boosters..
