The first gun target in Oswego was a 30-pounder cannonball that was located on the square in front of the courthouse. The first shot from the cannonball killed one of the town's three citizens, William Dickson, on February 16th, 1836. Between 1836 and 1840, there were five more fatalities from gunfire in Oswego. In 1857, a small arsenal was built within city limits which led to an increase in shooting activity outside of town. On November 3rd of that year, an Indian boy named John Marshall died after being shot by two men walking their dog near his home. One man was arrested and charged with murder but later acquitted due to lack evidence. In 1865, a new armory and range were built within city limits which led to increased shootings around town. On July 14th of 1870, six people were killed when Confederate soldiers opened fire on a peaceful meeting at the old Masonic Lodge located just east of town. In 1892, Oswego became part of Cook County when it was created from parts of DuPage and Kane counties. At this time guns began becoming increasingly rare askells compared to other firearms such as knives or pocket pistols

Oswego, Illinois is a town located in DuPage County, Illinois. The population was 2,594 at the 2010 census. Oswego was founded in 1858 by Captain George W. Smith and his family. The name "Oswego" comes from the Ojibwa word "osweesh", meaning place of refuge or safety. The first settler in Oswego was Captain George W. Smith's wife Sarah Ann (née Kapp). She arrived with her husband Captain John Kapp on October 3, 1858, and soon after they began to build a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1860 they laid out their plat for the town on land that includes present day North Avenue and West Washington Streets. They were joined by two others settlers: Elijah Prentice and James Laughlin Jr.. On November 6, 1862 the first post office appeared in Oswego with Ephraim Dolan as postmaster. By 1865 there were six stores, four blacksmiths and one farmstead in Oswego- all courtesy of Colonel Ebenezer Swanwick who donated 320 acres of land to become the nucleus of today's community which he named Swanwick Forest after himself. By 1870 there were twenty-six residents living in OsweGO; ten farmers, twelve mechanics and nine traders/commerce men - all proprietors of their own businesses within the small village center dominant then both economic resources (landowning elites) and social organizations (rural yeomanry). One can visualize then today's boundaries between Oswego proper ('Old Town'), including its cobblestone streetscape typical of villages during this time period; North Avenue extending northeasterly from downtown through residential blocks bounded by Broadway northumberland Road eastward to where it joins I-635 southbound just west of University Avenue; West Washington Boulevard continuing eastward from North Avenue past businesses into what became today Western Springs until joining I-635 southbound near Elmhurst Hospital; while 'New Town' consisted only of what are currently South Argyle Drive and Main Street within limits established by city ordinance dating back to 1911-'12 - boundaries expanding somewhat recently as development encroaches along those streetscapes following annexation adjacent properties dating back to 1955-'56!
On November 1, 1802, the first permanent settler in Oswego Township was John Stephenson. The township was organized on January 3, 1803. In 1847, the United States government established the Illinois Central Railroad to connect Chicago with points east. The railroad crossed through Oswego Township and built a line through it to Carbondale on July 24 of that year. The Carbondale-Oswego Railway Company was chartered on October 14, 1897 by Act of Congress and acquired by the Illinois Central Railroad on December 29 of that year. The company operated as a subsidiary of the IC until February 15, 1915 when it became a separate corporation under the name of the Carbondale-Oswego Railway Company again.
