Oswego is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,371 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Oswego was founded in 1836 and incorporated as a village in 1847. The name "Oswego" comes from the Ojibwa word ozweshi meaning "a place where there is no water." The first settler in Oswego was James Emmons who arrived around 1836. Other early settlers were John McDonald and his family, Isaac Goodyear, Benjamin Fenton and his brother Job Fenton, Peter Kinsman and his wife Mary (née Hennepin), Nathan Hale and his brother Samuel Hale, Philip French and Nicholas French Jr., Ebenezer Sibley and Amos Northrup Sibley, Elijah Hicks (1810-1881) and his nephew John Hicks (1821-1904). By 1840 all these people had left for unknown reasons. In 1846 Oswego became an independent village when it combined with seven other townships to form Macon Township. This change came about because of difficulties getting government aid for roads through that township which included parts of two larger townships - Oglethorpe Township on the north side of I-90 near Chicago Heights and Will County on the south side near Elmhurst Manor - both of which were part of Cook County at that time. In 1850 all the villages within Macon Township merged into one to form what is now Oswego Village; however this merger did not take effect until after Macon Township had been dissolved by law in 1865 because its residents had voted to secede from Cook County under the auspices of the new Kansas City–St Joseph Railway Company! Osborne's rich heritage can be seen throughout her community today: many businesses are named after local leaders such as James Emmons Insurance Company (now known as insurance giant AIG), Pritchett & Fry lumberyard (founded by General Electric co-founder George Pritchett), First National Bank (founded by millionaire banker William Dickson Carey), Engstrom Manufacturing Company (manufacturer of radios, TVs, kitchen appliances etc.), Jardine Matheson Paper Millinery School District No 2 (established 1917), Locke Noyes Brewery ((now defunct)), Emerson College [(now Emerson University)] among others. There are also several restaurants located in town including The Chicken Shack(opened 1973 by then high school student Brian Lynch)and Pizza Hut(opened 1984). Schools include Sacred Heart Catholic Church—the original parish church—MacON Area Senior High School; Holy Name Central High School; St Bernard's Episcopal Church; Evangelical Lutheran Church—The German Baptist [Church] (); Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School opened in 1966; OSU Health Science Center opened in 2006 inside Newmark Hall on State Street opposite First National Bank;; Roosevelt Middle School open since 1978 outside First National Bank;; South Side High School open since 1957 inside Newmark Hall on State Street opposite Roosevelt Middle School;; OSGO Park which includes a playgrounds,, multiple basketball courts including one with a 3-point line,, softball fields,, tennis Courts,,,, soccer Fields,,,, multipurpose room used for classes like business administration or marketing etc.; HeritageLink golf course adjacent to town limits OSWEGO IS LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF IL'S LARGER CITIES LIKE CHIBIANA AND WILMINGTON HEIGHTS BUT HAS ITS OWN LOCAL LIFESTYLE WITH ITS OWN CRAFT BEAUTY PACKAGES INCLUDING ARTS AND CRAFTSMANSHIP THROUGHOUT HER COMMUNITY AS WELL AS HER OWN PARKS AND OFFICIAL TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM THAT INCLUDES ROADWAYS THAT ARE FUNCTIONAL FOR BUSINESS OPERATIONS AS WELL AS PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION NEEDED FOR SCHOOL ACTIVITIES IN THE COMMUNITY
There are a few different types of gun swivels. The first type is called a "tight-grip" or "dog-leg" swivel, and it was invented in the 1870s by John Moses Browning. The second type is called a "gun-slide" or "paddle-leg" swivel, and it was invented by Gustavus Adolphus Stenzel in 1892. The third type is called a "self-righting gun swivel," and it was invented by George Washington Carver in 1915. All three types of gun swivels have two parts: the upper part (the slider) and the lower part (the shaft). The upper part has a round dial that can be turned to rotate the Swivel around its axis. Oswego is a town located in Oswego County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,724 at the 2000 census. It takes its name from nearby Oskaloosa Lake and until 1856, it was known as Green Gables. The first residents of what would become Oswego were farmers who arrived around 1837. They were followed by settlers from Michigan and Indiana during the 1840s and 1850s. By 1857, the town had a population of just over 100 people. During the next few decades, Oswego grew steadily with new arrivals coming to live here for various reasons such as farming or business opportunities. In 1912, however, an epidemic caused many deaths in the area which led to a decrease in population and property values. In 1960, Oswego became an incorporated village with a population of 785 people. Since that time it has seen steady growth with more businesses moving into the town and more residents moving in to take advantage of its amenities including schools, shopping malls and health care facilities. Today, Oswego continues to be one of the most vibrant small towns in Illinois with a rich history that is sure to stay alive for years to come!
The first English settlers in Oswego were Major John Kirkland and his men who landed on the east side of the river in 1679. The town was founded by Colonel Nicholas Latham, an early settler, in 1795. It became a village in 1827 and a city in 1898.
