Oswego is a small town in central Illinois, United States. The population was 1,628 at the 2010 census. One daughter married John Lawrie; one son married Sarah Burt; one son married Mollie King; one daughter married George Hinkleman; and one daughter married Samuel Morse (Samuel Morse & Alfred Vail). In 1818-19, Oswego hosted the first national agricultural fair which attracted attention from around the world. This event is often credited with starting America's modern agriculture industry. The fair also helped give rise to local trade as people from all over came to sell their goods in Oswego's storefronts. Local businesses thrived during this time period thanks to good transportation connections and easy access to markets abroad. During World War II, Oswego played an important role as a munitions production center due to its location on the banks of the stream known as "The Big Red" which supplied water for mills located downstream. The war also resulted in an increase in population as many people moved into town because it offered fertile land and opportunities foremployment outside of farming or manufacturing jobs typical of those times
