Oswego is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Oswego Township. The first European to visit Oswego was Captain John Smith in 1795. He named the town for his brother-in-law and friend, George Washington. Smith's Expedition visited the area in 1796–97 on their way from St. Louis to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and back across the Mississippi River. In 1819, an act was passed by the General Assembly of Illinois entitled "An Act for providing for the Improvement of certain Roads in this Territory." This act designated two roads as routes leading into Oswego: one established road called "Old State Road" (present day US Route 24) while another road connecting Bloomington with Quincy was renamed "New State Road". In 1836, when Illinois became a state, Oswego became part of Racine County and remained so until it merged into Racine County in 1920. In that year, portions of Racine County were annexed by Chicago and became part of Chicago Heights; however, most of what is now City Park within city limits were not annexed until 1945 when they were combined with Humboldt Park into one citywide park system under the name Ofcie Park after Mayor James Mudd (the son-in-law of then City Councilwoman Likelike Ofcie). A post office called Osborne was established in 1837 but did not open until 1840. The name change came about because Amos Osborne served as Pollitzer Postmaster from 1840–1845 before he resigned to serve as Circuit Judge for Cook County from 1846 through 1850 due to term limitsimposed by Congress at that time; he would have been succeeded by his brother Elijah who also served as Circuit Judge from 1850 through 1860 before resigning again to become Mayor Ofcie's private secretary effective November 1st 1861 until he died suddenly less than a month later on October 10th 1862 having held that position since September 25th 1861 while serving concurrently on both local government bodies.) Gun sights, also known as sighting devices or rangefinder sights, are devices that allow a shooter to aim and fire firearms without having to look at the target. There are many different types of sights available on today’s firearms, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The first type of sight used with firearms was the crossbow sight. A crossbow gun sight consisted of an elevated armillary sphere or diamond-shaped mirror that was affixed to the barrel by a strap. The aimless eye system allowed shooters to use any position within their rifle scope for aiming, as long as they could see the object in front of them. Although this type of sight was originally designed for use with bowguns, it proved useful for other firearm applications as well. One of the earliest effective gun sights was invented by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1755. Conte’s design consisted of a two-piece metal reticle that sat behind a circular lens device made from brass or iron. This sight allowed shooters to hold their rifles at various ranges and adjust the focus according to their needs while hunting game. Because this type of sight required no magnification, it became very popular among beginners and ranged artillery commanders during the 18th century. Another early development in firearm sighting technology was the Weaverian Sight (also known as Weiser’s Sight).developed by Samuel Weiser in 1827. This invention allowed shooters to place their shots so that they would fall within 5 inches (12 cm) of the target instead of 10 feet (3 m) away like previous designs did. The village of Oswego was founded in 1836 by a group of pioneers. The original town site was a small marshy area on the edge of a low hill. The settlers had to clear land and build houses from scratch, because there wasn’t any available land nearby. In 1850, the first post office was established in Oswego. By 1870, the population had grown to over 100 people. In 1882, Oswego became an incorporated town.
