Oswego is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,482 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Oswego Canal National Monument and Historic Site preserves its original canal system dating back to 1825. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oswego were French explorers led by Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville in 1795. He named it after his birthplace, Orléans-sur- Loire, in France. In 1818, General John Eaton founded the village of Hyde Park on the banks of the stream that flows through Oswego Canal National Monument. This site served as a stop for goods traveling between Lake Michigan and Chicago until 1893 when Northwestern Railway built a new line south from Joliet to Northbrook which created a demand for local produce which allowed Hyde Park to become an agricultural center with processing plants throughout the late 19th century During World War II, many factories were built in Oswego and much of the town was destroyed by bombing raids including Bethlehem Steel Company's Canalside Works near downtown (now called FirstMerit Bank). Some reconstruction took place over several decades; however most notably occurred during the early 1960s when demolition began at nearby Wabash Arsenal and other munitions production facilities before being halted by protests from Friends ofthe Earth and others who saw these types ofactory closures as another example of corporate greed leading to environmental destruction

Oswego is a small town located in Oswego County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Oswego Township. The first settlers to the area that would become Oswego were farmers who arrived from Canada in 1836. They named their community after an English village in Northumberland, England which they had seen while on their farm tours. The name "Oswego" may have been inspired by a Shawnee word for "watercourse." In 1840, a post office was established at the site and was called "Oswald." In 1851, the name was changed to "Oswego Township." The township's residents voted to incorporate as a village in 1903. That year it became known as "Oswego," and has since been its permanent name. The first school opened in 1904 and served grades K-12; it burned down in 1951 but was rebuilt and reopened as OsweGO Elementary School. By 1978, all grade levels were combined into one building and it became known as OSWEGO Middle School; however, this building too ultimately burned down in 1991. A new middle school constructed on the same location opened in 2003; it is now known as OSWEGO High School. In 1916, Osgoode Manufacturing Company (now Monsanto) established a plant here that produced agricultural products such as corn seed and flour for local markets. This company later merged with other companies to form Dow Chemical Co., which still operates out of the old factory today adjacent to OSWEGO High School). One of Monsanto's most famous products was Agent Orange used during World War II to fight Japanese troops stationed along America's East Coast; some locals believe that this herbicide may have caused additional injuries or deaths among local civilians who lived near where it was used (although no definitive evidence exists). OSWEGO also has several heritage sites associated with its history: • First National Bank of Osgoode -founded 1865 • Second National Bank of Osgoode - founded 1902 • Pioneer Cemetery -established 1871 • Hollywood Cemetery -established 1888 • Mount Carmel Methodist Episcopal Church -built 1892 • Third National Bank Building – built 1924
Oswego was founded in 1834 by Samuel Oswego and his family. The village was named for the Oswegos, a Native American tribe that lived in the area at the time. The Oswego post office opened in 1835 and remained open until 1959. In 1865, the United States purchased land in what is now Oswego Township from the Iroquois nation. This land served as a military reservation until 1912. In 1932, an act of Congress designated parts of present-day Oswego Township as part of the Chicago metropolitan area. As a result, many businesses and residents moved to Illinois over the years.
