Oswego is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,682 at the 2010 census. Oswego is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by Aurora to the east, La Grange to the north and west, and Rockford to the south. The first permanent settler in Oswego was Dr. John G. Martineau in 1847. He founded a small cabin on Fox Creek near what is now Oswego High School and built a log cabin for himself and his family; it still stands today as a museum piece. In 1848, Captain David Black bought land in present-day Oswego from Dr. Martineau for $200 dollars cash; he established what would become Black's Ferry Landing on the Fox River across from where current-day State Road 257 meets the riverbed today. Black later became one of many " fur traders" who traveled through Oswego selling goods they acquired along their trips through North America during this era; some of these traders are buried at nearby Hillside Cemetery (now known as Elmwood Cemetery). In 1854, Doctor John Wirth started trading with Native Americans living along Lake Michigan via an overland route through Illinois called The Road of Rights which crossed least traveled parts of both states before reaching Chicago; Wirth's trade helped increase trade between those two countries and aided in developing commerce between Illinois and Michigan Territory during this time period In 1865, Jesse Lannon purchased 68 acres (27 hectares) of land just east of present-day South Park Avenue in what is now downtown Oswego from Jacob Hulton for $1,000 cash Lannon began platting out what would eventually become Oswego Township on this property: eight homes were completed by 1870 while others followed shortly thereafter By 1876 all but one home had been erected when Joseph Hennepin bought 1/4 mile (0.8 km) south of current day Erie Street for $2 per acre ($/ha) In 1877 Hennepin organized the first farmers' market in modern times when he opened Market Place near where Fountain Square now stands That same year he also donated land off Market Place to build First Congregational Church which remains standing today . That same year saw another big development when lumberman George Pullen agreed to sell 100 acres (40 hectares) east of present-day Erie Street for $10 per acre ($/ha) to be used exclusively for agricultural purposes This expansion led to increased production around town - fruit trees were being planted early on towards the end of that century while other crops such as corn started coming up later on One significant event that occurred during these years was a fire that destroyed much business activity around town center including Pullen's lumberyard complex which left many people uninsured resultant in some financial hardships over time . With things getting back under control following Pullen's donation several new businesses sprang up including J N & Sons Grocery Store which still stands today and finally Samuelson's Hardware store which replaced much earlier hardware store located behind First Congregational Church . Most notably however there was also Sprague Electric Supply Co., Inc., founded by Stanley Sprague who served as its first president until his death in 1984 When asking locals about their favorite memory or moment from those early days they often mention events related to farm life like planting eggs or harvesting beans etc.; sprague’s Contributions Park has been designated as such by local officials

The first European to visit Oswego was Régis De Champlain in 1608. In 1815, Oswego became a village under the name of Harbordville. On November 15, 1825, it become an agricultural village and on January 1, 1827 it became a town. The original town site was located on what is now east side of I-294 south of its current intersection with State Street. The land for the new town was acquired from Joshua Phelps and David Woodruff through gifts and grants between 1824 and 1830. In 1870 Unitarian missionaries started to preach in Oswego which led to the construction of a church in that year by Ebenezer Sibley (1802-1885). A post office called Osborne opened in 1865; it closed on December 12, 1925 because of high postage rates set by the state Department of Agriculture at that time. In 1907 lumberyard magnate Jens Jensen bought 137 acres (60 ha) north of town for $5 million dollars ($ as of 2019). He renamed his mill "Jensen Lumber" after himself and laid down lumber from this property beginning in 1908 until his death in 1961. Jensen's mill still produces heavy boxwood lumber today as well as plywood and other wood products such as flooring materials
