Oswego is located on the banks of the Missouri River near St. Louis and is part of the Springfield–based Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Oswego was French explorer Jacques Marquette in 1673. The community's name is derived from Osykon meaning "place where there are many oaks". The first settler in what became Oswego Township was Isaac Seibert in 1811; he purchased 4 acres (1 km²) of land from Nicholas Pontius for $225 worth of goods plus £5 for services rendered as an interpreter between French and Indian traders during the War of 1812. The village began to grow slowly until it exploded when one local family bought over 1,000 acres (500 ha) around 1837 for $4 per acre ($10 million today). hist period saw a number of religious denominations move into Oswego including Methodists, Baptists and Presbyterians which helped create a close-knit community that continues to this day with strong ties to its cultural heritage and historys. A post office was established at Oswego in 1838 and remained open until 1937; it was then combined with Orchard Grove to form what is now known as Orchard Park Post Office Park (); both post offices closed November 30th 1997 due to budget cuts by then-Governor George Ryan). In 1865, General Grant landed at Fort Snelling on his way north after winning the American Civil War; he picnicked here before continuing his journey northward via DeKalb County towards Cairo, Illinois. After spending two days here on October 25th 1865, he ordered General John Pemberton to cross the river at this spot east of present-day Hammondsville and march southward through present-day Orchard Park back upriver again so that he could enter Cairo intact – something that would not be possible without Bridgeport’s help! In 1870 Union Pacific railroad construction started nearby adjacent to what would become downtown Oswego; quickly becoming one of America’s most vibrant towns along with nearby Carbondale & Edwardsville as well as other villages within easy commuting distance like 3 miles (5 km). By 1900 there were more than 500 businesses with 2 miles (3 km) separating each one! Today Oswego offers visitors plenty of shopping options including boutiques such as Saks Fifth Avenue & Neiman Marcus while also boasting world-renowned restaurants such as Benares Chinese Restaurant & Balthazar Italian Restaurant among others - making it an ideal place for vacationers or tourists alike! Oswego, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. The name Oswego comes from Onondaga Indian tribe and means "Place of many fish." The first Europeans to visit Oswego were French traders in 1679. George Rogers Clark, who explored and discovered the Northwest Territory during his journey around North America in 1775-76, named it after Onondaga Chief Oswego's village on Canandaigua Creek near modern day Syracuse, New York. In 1814 John C. Frémont surveyed what would become Oswego Township while on his way to explore the Northwest Territory for Congress as part of his survey of California and Oregon. He named it after General James K. Polk's brother-in-law Colonel Timothy O'Brien (1784-1857), who had fought with him at Palo Alto in 1805 and at Buena Vista Hill in 1807 during the Mexican–American War (1810-1821). The first post office was established at Oswego on December 12, 1840 by Samuel Aiken with a one-room cabin built near present day Clinton Street and State Street. Aiken operated a stagecoach stop between Chicago and Dubuque for passengers traveling westward along Ira Jones Road then north to Quincy before continuing south to Bloomington; he also served as postmaster from May 9th 1840 until July 6th 1850 when he surrendered his office to James Yancey because Yancey had just taken over shoeshine service at the new Post Office Annex on State Street across from City Hall which opened that year as well as general merchandise store fronting State Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue which became known as Grist Mill Mall today In 1851 Addison Cooley organized a wagon road company called "The Prairie Express" which extended east from Quincy into Ottawa County via Clear Lake Bridge over Big Stone River into what would become Monroe Township; this route followed present day Route 66 until abandoned by farmers around 1870 when all wagon transportation ceased except for some occasional transport of goods across Big Stone River by boat
